  • General Question - Smoking

    Hi Guys

My Escort has started to smoke and I’ve done a few driving tests to see if anyone can help.

On Boost seems fine but if I roll the car down a hill in neutral then start to drive off again it puffing out a cloud of the blue stuff.

On tick over it seems ok.

I noticed it puffed out a cloud on full boost when I changed gear once but this didn’t seem blue and maybe due to being stood so long.

The car has been sat all year but something doesn’t seem right.

    Any Idea?

    Running around 390BHP.

What do you mean by rolling down hill in Neutral........do you really mean in gear with your foot off the throttle? ie over run

    Generally speaking:

Blue /Black Smoke on start up> Worn Valve Guides. Oil seeps out over night and sits on top of the pistons. Usually stops smoking a few minutes after starting engine.

Blue/Black Smoke on over run > worn rings/pistons/cylinders ( high cylinder vacuum pulls oil past rings and burns off as you start to drive again.)

Blue Black Smoke all the time > worn turbo oil seals. unburnt oil in exhaust will smell of unburnt oil and may be a little lighter in colour. Oil in the inlet system will burn and produce smoke smelling of burnt oil and will be blue. After time or a major seal failure the Inlet system will be oil saturated as will your ic's and hoses.

Grey Black smoke > over fueling. Also can be between gear changes especially on greys which isn't a problem

White Smoke ( water vapour) > coolant. Head gasket /crack in head etc.

there are other reasons for smoke but these are the simple reasons for the vast majority of smoking issues

      Thanks for the info..

I meant allowing the car to idle for a time them starting to drive off.

Before even thinking about that, do some checks. Have a Compression test done along with a cylinder leakage test. Take a look at your inlet pipes is there oil in them. Usually the outlet from the turbo will have a little pool of oil siting at the bottom of the hose.
Whats the condition of the plugs, just black or are they oily and wet?
What sort of oil consumption are you getting, ie how much oil are you using when you go out for a long run.
Smoky engines can be something as simple as the bore has become glazed and needs a honing or a glaze buster.
Depending on engine wear just putting in rings might not be an option.

Have a chat with a good indy and get them to do the checks if you cant do it

Based on what you have said I would firstly think turbo oil seal is just starting to play up seeping oil into the exhaust system but not enough to show all the time . Is there any quantity of oil in you boost pipes?

I'm still nor sure why you mention going down hill in neutral in your fist post but say tick over is OK??

And the Basic... what Oil you run on? We had Exactly that problem on a supra many years back, after oil change to a "best in the world super oil " from castrol.... changed back to 5w50 mobil1, all ok, ran it for years after...

But as Said do comp test and leakdown first. Kind of sound like turbo for me...

If pistons was worn that much it should breath fairly Heavy to on boost...

^^^ I can relate to the above, I used a castrol oil that caused some over run and post idle smoke - changed it to mobil 1 at the time and it stopped it.

As someone has mentioned, get the basics checked first before jumping to conclusions and definitely keep a record of oil consumption over 2 tanks of fuel. If you have to put 100ml in after 500 miles got to ask yourself is it worth leaving until it gets worse.

Does the car stand for long periods of time, if so i'd be erring towards stem seals or turbo.

Not sure that 10/60 is the right grade, I'm sure it should be 10/50

Personally I wouldn't start the car every month if you're not going to drive it. The oil will never get warm enough and Youll more than likely cause more wear to the engine due to not allowing to get to temp.

id say it sounds like rings but as already mentioned it could be as simple as the wrong oil grade. I use the titan
oil that Justin sells, it's quietened the engine and improved oil consumption over the millers I previously used

Smoking on over run is normally associated with valve stem seals , or guides . Had this issue once with her after doing top end rebuild.for some reason, one of the stem seals lifted off it's seat, causing blue smoke on overrun.took head off again to fix .new Ford stem seals were used. Not after market
