  • Gaz Gold coilovers clunking

    Hi all

    The Gaz Gold coilovers on my car don't seem to rotate very well, causing them to clunk and turn the bottom nuts. This makes the car go all over the shop.

    A friend mentioned a spacer at the top that could be missing.

    Any ideas welcome.

    There should be the standard roller bearing washer at the top of the shock to allow it to turn.

      Gaz coilovers are pretty good, but if they sit for a while they tend to seize up and clunk a bit. They don't cost much to have them serviced and replated by Gaz themselves, so worth taking them off and sending. But there should be a top hat on the coilovers that sit neatly into the turret.

          What I have found with GAZ coilovers and clunking is that say you have had the car jacked up when you let it down the top hat on the spring doesnt always sit back where it should and this allows the spring to move and not be seated correctly. Before the wheels touch the ground when letting it back down just put your fingers up to the top of the spring and make sure the top hat is seated into the spring. Other than that I dont find any issues with clunking.

            What do you do then when you get air? Is the spring preload low because the cars ride height is low? I would of thought with the correct preload on the springs and the correct weight of spring it should be impossible that the top hat becomes positioned incorrectly on the spring with the wheel(s) off the ground.

              The springs is not Long enough when lower car on screws and dont get helpersprings to stretch out to keep the tension on seats when wheel lift

                If this is the case you can get pre-load springs for coilovers to prevent this issue when jacking the car up.

                  Thats what helpersprings Are for, a low lb rate thin spring that compress when car is on ground and stretch out on wheellift to keep all in place.

                      I think a progressive spring like you describe would be better, but dont know If avilable? Or was you thinking of these smal helpersprings too?

                          What is the ideal pounds rate of coilover springs for road use ? Im on normal GAZ coilovers and always found them abit harsh just wondering what other people use for coilovers

                            Allot makes diffrence, i like softer and longer spring, since gets much more "forgiving" on active driving on roads. Track with slicks need harder.

                            I am around 300 front and under 200 rear. Lenght i forgot again... think one of old gravelsetups had like 220front and 120 rear.

                            Quick to change and try.

                              Thanks for that i will have to look into lengths. I havent even looked to see what length they are that are currently in the car, all i know is they are very unforgiving.
