  • Fuel Pump Looms, *Warning*

Hi Guys, I spotted a Fuel Pump Loom for sale on here last week, and i usually don't bother to get involved in things like this, but i just feel i have to give you a bit of a warning about some looms that are on the market,as i feel they are dangerous.
Im not trying to just sell my Looms are there are plenty of others that do the job well.I just don't want to see anyone get stung.

When i made the design for my Escort Fuel pump looms i needed the loom to:

1,Keep the inertia fuel cut off switch active,
2,supply power and ground to the pump,
3,replace the whole Fuel pump loom right up to the fuel tank.

Now the loom i have seen had a direct ground to the ECU for its trigger, then a single cable running down the car to the connector behind the bumper.

    this means,

1, The fuel cut off inertia switch is no longer working. If you have an accident, the fuel pump will continue to run, you only need to look at the fuel rail and fuel reg on these cars to see any front end impact can easily knock the reg or rail off, and in the case of these looms the pump will continue to pump fuel into the engine bay! This can also invalidate your insurance!
I use the OE pump live as a trigger, so the fuel cut off switch still works and turns the new pump relay off.

2, This loom only had a power cable to the battery. The ground was attached somehow with a self tapping screw to the body, Sure it will work, but i purposely chose not do do this and return to the battery to avoid any possibility of a bad earth and corroded ground connection. We have all seen cars with interacting rear lights due to poor ground connections, if that was to happen to a fuel pump you could kill an engine!

    3) The loom i saw only ran as far as the connector behind the bumper, now this connector corrodes and gains resistance to the point it gets hot on some, i usually cut these off and hard wire them on OE looms where a new loom is not fitted.
This means that the small sub loom from the tank to the bumper does not get replaced and you're still using half of the corroded poor connector.
Which is why i made my loom with connectors to pop into the fuel sender plug so the whole loom is replaced.

Just a heads up to keep an eye out on what you are buying, it might end up costing you in the long run!

Im not sure who makes what really, and i don't want to get involved in any slanging matches relating to who makes what, i just wanted to advise people to watch out. I hope every one understands the reasons why i felt i had to say something.

If your loom uses the fuel cut, that would be a great start!

            Mine are £55.00

It really depends what you have, i can only say mine run directly from the battery, with the relay 15cm from the battery usually mounted on the inner wing, to keep the unfused span as short as possible.
From there they run down the inner sill, and direct to the pump.
                Regards James.

I would recommend fitting one if it hasn't got one fitted, you could use a sapphire one. I always use the OE pump feed for a trigger, so if one is fitted as std then it will work as normal.
                    Regards James.

I guess it could get powered from the fuse box, but i wouldn't do this especially on an Escort for various reasons with there extremely temperamental fuse boxes!

James, do yours run from battery into the car to the rear or just underneath?

From battery, through the bulkhead and along the inner sill in the car
                            Regards James.

so the ones which are running to the rear are not safe?
