  • help needed, clocks not lighting

Clocks stopped glowing so sent them to Brendan and he has fitted a new inverter.

Plugged them back in and still no glow.

Got my hands on a spare working set and still no glow, is there a separate fuse for this or has anybody got any ideas??

    Small turbo car

    Thanks

    Calum

Hi devil. Try to figure out if your dimmer is plugged in and working, as this is a common reason for non glowing dash.

thats just what i was going to say,the power goes through the dimmer switch first so if its knackered or missing then you wont get anything at all

Just checked, the dimmer is in place and dims the bulb at the top of the clocks when turned.

Does anybody know how to bypass the dimmer to see if despite working, it is faulty?

Probably something daft like the light switch stalk ,give it a wack on the end <!!!

The next thing would be to check you have power at the connector the plugs into the dials with a volt meter which i suspect you have as the dimmer dims the bulb and then check the flexi circuit board on the back of the dials for breaks in the circuit. If these are both fine you have an inverter / inverter board fault.

As you've said they went to Brendan, presumably he would have tested them, so if they worked with him, chances are it's something inside the car, but what I can't help!!

As for the dimmer, IIRC there is only two wires and you just join them together to bypass it

It doesn't sound like the dimmer is the problem, but...

There are three wires connected to the gauge illumination dimmer switch; two grey w/yellow and one brown (not sure if it has a stripe). The brown wires are typically grounds (earths for you barbarians) so the grey wires will be the hots. As the dimmer is a rheostat / variable resistor one wire will come from the fuse box and the other will continue to the inverter. Connecting the grey wires together will bypass the dimmer and supply the inverter with the maximum voltage when the light switch is on.

The way to narrow down the problem is to pull the cluster so you can check for voltage at the connector. If no voltage - there is likely a break in the wire. If yes voltage - then, as has been suggested, inspect the foil runs on the cluster. If you find nothing obvious, plug in the connector and probe for voltage at various points.

                    r/
