  • Which front shocks? Bilstein B6 update

Hi all, I'm looking at replacing my front konis as they have been on a while and are looking considerably worse for wear. I don't fancy replacing them with new ones as I hear they bend easy and don't want to take a hammer to the spring base. Is anybody running bilstein b6 or spax adjustable? If so what are they like and do you have to modify the bases like the konis? I have cobra springs.
    here's the b6

Bilstein yes. Not sure on sooringbase, since that problem comes from that Sierra shocks is different to escort, and today most Will be Sierra... Used to be different partnumber on Sierra and escort cosworth shocks

I’m going with Bilstein this time round as damping is softer than the Konis.

What is the ride like on the bilsteins mate? Did you have to modify the spring base?

Think they are only damped 15% firmer than standard vs 50% on konis

Doesn't the stiffness come from the springs though? The damping is only the speed at which the shaft returns?

Stiffness is spring rate but damping control on compression and rebound is controlled by the internal piston isn’t it?
less harshly damped strut will ride smaller bumps better etc

Bilstein B6 Sport High Gas Pressure Monotube Shock Absorber is uprated by around 10-15% on standard damping.

The biggest difference between these Bilstein shockers and their twin tube rivals is Bilstein ability to combine a smooth ride with excellent spring control. Not all dampers are created the same...

Especially noticeable is the firm way the Bilstein B6 damper deals with big bumps or potholes and its control of small deflections of suspension at high speed, leading to excellent handling.

Bilstein B6 Shock Absorbers are an Ideal upgrade for standard Cosworth dampers and are designed to work with standard ride height and up to 30mm lowering springs.

Hoping they will stop the crashy ride I seem to have, my shocks are really old so could be due to that, I’m on cobra springs also.
Looking to try some Ahmed springs to see if abit more travel also helps

So I opted for the B6 based on the comments above. When I got them they were boxed up as escort and sierra cosworth 4x4. The spring bases are exactly the same size as the konis. Anyway I built them up and installed them. Not driven with them yet but 1st impressions bouncing the front up and down are they are a lot stiffer than the konis which were set to max. They were over 10 years old though so could've gone soft. Although they felt ok. I'm running 8x18 wheels with offset et 15. Very close to spring bases, think i will run a 5mm spacer just for piece of mind. If you have et25 wheels there is no way they will fit and you will have to modify the bases as per koni.

Good stuff Dave. I too would add a small spacer to aid clearance
