Isn't there a recirculating one as standard? If you run no dump valve (recirculating or atmospheric) you will get that fluttering sound instead which I think is air retarding the turbo and, as Dan says, that will put undue stress on it which may affect lifespan.

I ran without one for a while with no issues but not sure how it effects turbo life span

I’ve just converted my ST to BT do I need to run a dump valve as don’t want to spoil the look with that thing sticking out!!
