  • Freelanders!?

Has anyone had much experience with freelanders.

I hear a few mild horror stories, but then you hear that on most Marques.
Looking for a new family car for Kim around springtime next year, something big enough for the dogs in the boot area, aswell as large enough to cater if we ever become a family, along with the ability to tow a small trailer with the clio on for trackdays... All whilst not being to big for Kim to adjust to.
(Clio's being the biggest sized vehicle she has ever driven!)

We both quite like the slightly facelifted '04 & '05 plates as a TD4, but are they better/worse than a 1.8 petrol?

    Any experiences, good or bad?
Things to keep an eye out for while hunting?
    Usual wear and tear points?
    Maintenance and servicing costs?

    Cheers.

Don't buy a petrol one there shit Kelv and totally useless for what you want towing a trailer.

TD4 have there problems with oil pumps, other than that just the usual things to check on everything. Make sure you go for a fully serviced one.

I would choose a pathfinder over a freelancer if it was me Kelv.

You can just see mine here in background,

I'm a landrover man so probably bias but I bought it for the misses and its a 2005 td4.

Service it myself its done 43k mile and is sweet as a nut.

Petrol ones are gash and have a k series rover engine that has head gasket issues.

Also earlier pre facelift leak in the boot and u get a swimming pool in the floor well.

I find it as good as the RR and not far off the defender in the snow plus misses is happy as its good for parking and popping to town in.

It's a BMW td4 so pretty robust, just need regular service history and watch out for ones with prop removed running 2wd its quite common!
If I took it to LR or a specialist say then probably looking at 150-300 a service depending on which one. I buy all genuine filters and oil in bulk and it prob costs around 50 quid for a full service! Parts are cheap! Really easy to work on and does about 35-40 mpg if I remember rite! More then the RR that's for sure lol.

The reason people remove the prop sharft is because the rear diffs are common to fail and at about £1500 to replace its not worth spending the money so a few bolts out and prop off and 2wd.

Oh well, I shall buck the trend here and say I like mine, although I haven't had it long and used it much yet. Mines a 55 plate 1.8 petrol. Basically bought it as a dog truck. It's in cracking condition with only 2 previous owners and I paid £2995 for it. It doesn't need to be quick, I've got the Mondeo and the Cossie for that. Just needs space in it for taking the dog about or collecting stuff if I need to, so it does all I want.
                      Cheers

I won't change my fleet, I like having cars that are built shit and cost a fortune to run and prone to catastrophic failures.

That's why I added a ford escort to the car park!

Just had a td4 in the work there with seized engine, 05 plate, Managed to get it moving and started but its knocking its cunt in,

Petrol 1's are shit, but cheap enough to buy

Replaced a few transfer boxes and v/c but apart from this diesel 1. I haven't had any other problems with td4 engine on them, I'm actually gonna try get this car to put an engine in it to use for myself
