how can i get the crap out of the header tank by hand?

ive been playing with my new bits & pieces today cleaning them up but i cant get inside the header tank very well, any ideas on how to do it ive tried it with the wifes toothbrush but i only got so far in, shuuuuu dont tell her

As above, the coolant stains quite badly and nothing much can clean it. I did the same with the wife's Focus RS, but since the header tank is exactly the same as a normal Zetec, it quite easy to fetch a mint one from a scrappy. But for an EsCos, you best off buy a new one.

Dishwasher didn't work for me. Will be interested to see the outcome of this.

Put a handful of (dry) rice in the header tank together with a good slosh of brake cleaner,moit the lid on and plug the two hose outlets. Shake the tank vigorously and watch the crap coming off. Once it's all off, flush with clean water.

It won't sort discolouration of the tank, but it will get all the crap off inside. Did mine a few weeks ago.
