  • Anyone ride motocross here?.

    Morning guys,
I'm thinking about taking up moto x as I've always wanted to do it since about 18.
Used to ride mountain bike trials and still do abit of dh riding.
I'm lacking that buzz as nothing in the uk can really give you the same feeling as proper riding like morzine etc.
Thinking of selling the fiesta I just purchased to fund it.
I've only ridden a motor bike a couple of times so complete beginner.
Main question is I'm just over 6ft and just under 12 stone, will I be ok with a 125 or would I need a 250?.
My local track has max of 125cc at the moment due to some legal issues but are trying to get it opened back upto 250 and 4 strokes etc.
    Thanks for any advice

125 will be fine for a start, used to race and thinking of starting again the buzz of 40 of you on a start line can NEVER be replaced(its just the bouncing down the track again puts me off!), just cars and kids take up my time now, having said that my eldest is really getting the hang of his 50cc and im thinking of getting a big wheel 80 so i can have fun on that as well.

      Can u not buy a 250 , 4 stroke? Its the same class as a 125 / 2 stroke
But tbh if you have only been on bikes a handful of times a 125 will still feel very quick to you,

I still race motocross, I'm just under 6ft and 14 stone with all my riding gear on and prefer my 2013 KTM 125 two stroke, I'm 49 now and they put me in the Vets class with all the other old blokes! I'm up against 250's 500's etc etc and a 125 is more than capable against the bigger bikes. there seems to be a big noise issue with two strokes these days especially with the ACU, the AMCA doesn't seem too bad with little or no noise testing,

Give it a go you'll love it, I'd recommend you get a 2005 onwards Honda CR125 or KTM SX, both good reliable bikes, if you don't fancy actually racing, most tracks have practice days on them for around £20 for the day and trust me its the best £20 you'll ever spend! and most people end up racing with each other anyway

Thanks guys! I think the 125 would suit me and be abit safer.
Ref the 4 stroke, for some reason the local track ( matchems) does not allow 4 strokes at present due to noise I think, max is 125 2 stroke.
I poss have a px in the pipeline of the fiesta with a 2004 suzuki Rm125 ( believe 2004 was the year they cloned the yz engine onwards?).
For my bike budget of £1500 max I was looking at either a yz 125 or rm 125? Not sure why but I've always liked both bikes.
Booking a practice day with yamaha to see how I get on it's £180 for the day inc bike hire

Personally the ktm 125 is the best bike in its class I had many ktm 125s then went onto kxf250 then Yzf 250 but the two stroke I personally feel are better fun and far cheaper to maintain. If your starting out any 125 will feel great and powerful just the ktm is the quickest in its class and I loved them never had any problems with them bar fork seals on the wp suspension were poor.whatever 125 you get you will have loads of fun

Raced myself for about 10 years and like the guys on here I prefer a 2 stroke anyday
I still regularly ride as my brother in law still races, he has a 250 and a 450/4 stroke and I do not like them at all.

Great sport but even the smallest of falls can see you in hospital and off work for weeks

YZ 125 is a great bike, I really didn't like the KTM, yes they were fast but I never felt comfortable on them.

Here's my old YZ 125, bought it brand new and spent a fortune on it

Without doubt A&E is guaranteed if racing broken arms wrists and shoulders were never be the same my dad raced to a high level and he is suffering from years of abuse .is it worth it? When younger yeah but for me to compete against the young guns with no fear is not for me anymore as said you can be laid up for weeks but I loved moto x when at it even at fun level you start to get carried away and start chasing the guy in front!!!! Then more often than not you get a wake up call with a face full of dirt and broken levers

I used to ride bikes in my youth until an RM250 nearly lost me my arm, I fell off and broke off the knobbly part of my elbow, it ended up further up my arm, I had to have my elbow wired back together but after the op I got a huge infection which I was told if it spread to the bone it would kill it and my arm would be chopped off, luckily they managed to get rid of the infection after pumping me with all kinds of anti biotics. I gave up bikes after that for about 10 years, then bought a YZ125 but couldn't get back into it, I was too worried about hurting myself again and found my fitness wasn't up to it, I was f**ked after a couple of laps. If you do take it up, make sure you buy all the protective gear.

i love motorcrossers, i used to buy them and faff around a bit,the last one was soooo mint i couldn't get it dirty, when you buy a proper one thats been looked after by someone who could afford to keep it like new its a fooker to get it dirty

anyway i dunno anout anyone else but theres practice tracks you can ride a crosser around on,like this one in ellesmere port. buy a bike and get it out without dodging the old bill, dogs, nobshiners going the wrong way round a field etc etc.

One thing I've always managed to stay within my limits on a bike so should be the same on an mx bike I hope, got full sick pay in my job so hope it's not needed!.
When is the best time to buy a bike? Was thinking dec/ jan when people need the ££?
