  • retaining a private plate

right guys, I'm selling my van, its got on it my private plate that our lass bought me as a wedding present, my question is, can I just send the log book off with the relative paper work to retain the plate or do I need to sort it before I fill out the log book for the new owner?? ive been told I cant just bung it all in the post at once but I need to hear this from others who actually know because I'm sure it should be as simple as that
    one for the road?? ......

I think you need to sort out the plate paperwork first, wait to get the V5 back with the correct plate on it, and then sign over the V5 to the new owner. If you send the V5 with the private plate on it away with the new keeper details on it, they will legally own the plate.

You can do everything at the same time.

      Form V317.

Might be able to do it online soon too as there has recently been some changes.

No retention fee, only £80 to put on a retention cert, Assign online, change name of nominee and grantee is free and will be done online, etc etc

lol I'd almost forgot about this question I'd popped on here, I rang the dvla and the guy did say if I send the log book off with the relevant form and £80 the log book would go to the new owner with the old reg back on and the private plate retention would come back to me
