a qustion thats been asked before but wonder who to go to for an underside resto ?

  • #2
It all depends how far you want to go but tbh it's not a hard job to do it yourself.

What do you class as an underside resto?

All suspension off and powder coated/painted

Floor stripped back and stone chipped/painted

Engine and box out and plated/painted.

It can be done in stages, ie rear beam, shafts, suspension, diff etc can be dropped in less than an hour, then clean and paint rear floor pans, re do all oily bits and back together. You could probably do the whole back end in a couple of weeks depending on how quick your painter/powder coater can get the bits back to you

Your making it sound a little to easy Dave, getting all the underseal off was my biggest task and a timeconsuming job. Knowing exactly what you need will help as i found one thing leading to another and sourcing bits can take time as well.
Like Dave says it can be done but you need to have your heart in it.
      Good luck

Maybe mate, I suppose I've been lucky in the ones I've done haven't been in too bad a state to start with so not had to spend weeks cleaning off the underside. The saff that I'm doing at the mo has been the worst one yet but even that could have been done in a weekend if I'd got my finger out. I find the wire brush cups that fit on a 4.5" grinder are brill at shifting any underseal. Screw fix do se half decent ones at around a fiver each, you'll prob need a dozen or so to do the rear end and floor on an escos

I had to chisel all mine off as i found the grinder just making the underseal go like paste and just pushed it about . I think that was the hardest part. Got to say that putting it back together all powder coated or restored and clean i found a great self satisfying job.

heat gun and a scraper worked a treat on the underseal on the MG, then 5 litres of petrol and some scouring pads got the rest off and cleaned it up a treat. Must admit that is probably the worst job of any resto.

About to do the back half of the Saph.

Could someone give a summary of the products to use to prep and paint the underside once it is spotlessly clean and or bare metal please

An underside restoration I'd say is definitely worth it with these cars. I had every intention of doing mine myself, have handed over the paint and assembly to a pro. I'll be honest I underestimated how much time it would take. I started taking a portion of underseal firstly from curiosity. My car I've always garaged and had since Feb 02, the guy before garaged it and it looked solid. However removing some underseal revealed all sorts that needed attention. The worst areas were ones that were double skinned but had factory holes in the side of them, at these points the holes weren't sealed and despite having wax, water over the years collected in the lowest points and rotted from the inside out. What looked a pin hole, turned out to be large areas of both skins having to be cut out and refabricated. Fair play to my friend who's a marine welder he matched the contour of the section and you wouldn't know it's been done. Bottom line, to do it worthwhile the underseal has to come off to see what it's hiding. Good luck

Dave, send me a text to remind me and I'll route out the stuff I used. I can't remember what it was called but it was a 2 part epoxy that you either sprayed or brushed on, it sets rock hard then I put a product called Raptor by Upol over the top of that. Should see me right for a good few years now
