  • 3.9:1 final drive

So having bought an oplinger box from Mark , it comes with 3.9:1 drop gears. Does any one have any experience of these cars with this final drive ratio. I will be planning to do distance driving touring the EU in the car some time in the distant future. So a little worried about higher revs when cruising and economy. Mark MAD will be doing some work on the engine soon, so wont be standard power. Whats your thoughts and experience chaps and chapesses ?

Depends what wheels you runing, I had been told that it's a bit like running standard wheels instead of 18s, also you going to need rear diff, need some revs vs speed chart up for 3.9

Ive 19 supers with 35 profile tyres. Rear diff no probs, Mark can get the cw & pinion. Agreed any one with such a chart would be great . thanks.

Read that it's a great mod for driving hard but not so sure for crunching the miles as Think for me it would put the car outside of its closed loop setting of 3k at 70 mph.
i went to silverstone and drove outside of the 3k closed loop as knew the roads and it drank fuel.
when I went to the Essex meet the m25 had loads of cameras so stuck to 70mph and under 3k and I used way less fuel.
i came to the conclusion driving on the forest roads where I live it would be great, but any show I do will on average be a plus 200 mile round trip mostly on motorways and the extra rpm and fuel would annoy me too much.
our Nissan qashqai revs high in 5th and it gets annoying.

To add if I went 3.9 I would want a taller 5th gear which I think you can get?

For me... No way i would have any higher ratio then stock on a car i should drive mainly on road over longer distance... Hell i emtyed Revcounter (and yes meen revcounter not oe rpm cut, since that was gone) on saph on shitty norway roads with stock ratio... So "cruising" in EU higway and autobahn i would imagine i would be more annoyed for every mile driven...

Hi frank, just to make sure first,it's a bara box. As for the 3.9 there awesome on short journeys, but on long runs there loud and rev high. My oplinger box in my escort doing 75mph is 4000 rpm it's class as it just goes when you put the foot down but annoying on long runs.
              Thanks Mark.

Thanks Mark, I get confused with the 2 types of box. I think listening to every one so far that standard ratios will be best for me. I wont be short oh HP to make her shift when required and I dont like revy cars tbh.

Sort of. There's no vacuum and the gauge is sitting at 0 psi and as soon as you but the foot down it's full boost straight away if that makes sense.
                        Thanks Mark.
