I hope to get a new one from fords, failing this does anybody know if another ford part would fit
or is it a bespoke part to the car, as what I am led to believe.
I think it's a Bosch part (I may be corrected on that) but it is unique to the T25 Escort with regards to Ford use. It may have been used by other manufacturers, might be worth cross referencing the part numbers.
A couple things to do before replacing the MAF. Get a can of MAF cleaner and give the hotwire a thorough clean by spraying it with the cleaner. Check for air leaks after the MAF. Do have a BOV or other mods?
The MAF is also used on the 2.9 V6 scorpio.
Ford part no's
91GB-12B579-BA
6848044
Hitachi part number
U11FR04-AFS
ERA make a copy of unknown quality.
Many other ford parts can be made to fit. The transfer function of the alternate MAF would need to be programmed to a chip and plugged onto the J3 port.
Looking at hitachi literature, they claim U11FR04-AFS was used in another ford part number.
92BB-12B579-AA / 6580527 which looks like a smaller housing.
Using the same electronics in a different size housing is a valid way of rescaling the output.
It could be as simple as taking the electronics from 92bb and fitting it to an EsCos MAF body. This is experimental and would need to be done with wideband installed to prove it is safe for the engine.
A little trivia related to this. During the early days of Fox Mustang EFI tuning, companies were just learning to work with the EEC-IV and MAF, so they had to trick the ECU rather than re-program it. A company called C&L made larger MAF bodies - 65mm, 73mm, 80mm - and provided different sensor tubes that would calibrate the MAF for the size of injectors in the engine. As a result, the ECU could drive 24lb/hr, 36lb/hr, or 42lb/hr while thinking it was driving the stock 19s.
thats simple rob, just undo the 2 bolts that hold it in,pull it out and give it a good squirt of brake cleaner, theres just a fine wire element you spray thats it
