  • Clutch choices - Need help

    Hello,

Currently my car has a NOS genuine Ford clutch and is live mapped by NMS at 360-380 @25 psi.

When Karl was mapping it he had to hold back on boost as the clutch started slipping in 3rd and 4th.

My own fault for starting to build a standard car, I've got an AB07 inlet cam to go in and I'm going for the PDE gearkit come the better weather, so will be fitting a new clutch.

Looking for people's experience with clutches for 400-430bhp.

Currently I'm deciding on AP 6 paddle or a Helix 6 paddle.

Im still on cable and don't really want to go hydraulic as it means cutting into the bulkhead.

6 paddle in mine and cable and its been ok for me for years, you just get used to it however the hyd clutch mod supposed to be very good.

Same as above 6 paddle with hydraulic conversion but you could use a AP organic clutch with Motorsport cover which is a must, used mine up to 440 ish no probs then went over and started to slip after a load of mapping, will be better with hydro conversion as the motorsport cover is heavy lol

Which brand 6 paddle, AP or Helix?

Also the hydraulic conversion, did you use slave and master or go centrepush type?

Just had my gearbox rebuilt so went for a new clutch too.

I'm still on the standard cable on my 2WD, but had an AP 6 paddle with an AP heavy duty cover. Takes the power and never slipped, but downside is that it very, very heavy and a pain in traffic. Yes you can go hydraulic, but it's more expense, but worth doing.

So I went for an AP 6 paddle from Burton Power and a Helix heavy duty cover from Matt Lewis. Reason is, because nobody has stock. The Helix cover is rated higher than the AP heavy duty cover, but it's actually much lighter on the foot on a standard cable. That's just the perfect all rounder IMO, it's light, strong and you don't need to go hydro.

Go for that setup, will cost you around £500 all in with a new release bearing. But make sure you skim the flywheel too!

Thats exactly what I've been advised, Helix 6 paddle from Burton and keep cable.

Ive tried a Helix paddle on a saff with hydro master/slave and it was very hard, I don't think I could live with it.

i just guessed AP may be slightly lighter a short you say they are rated less

No, the 6 paddle itself is fine, it's the cover that I'm on about. The AP heavy duty is as it says, very heavy but it will withstand anything. It's strong.

But the Helix heavy cover is rated higher than the AP heavy cover, but it's actually lighter on your leg strangely

Where abouts are you? You can try mine if you'd like, see what I mean. Feels like driving a Fiesta now

Think it’s AP and runs slave and master

Yeah I'm with you, there's only pennies between them but I don't want to waste £500.

Im really wanting to go Helix tbh, just over the years Ap have been proven to work.

Thanks for the offer if your near, Im north east based, Tyne and Wear

Loads mix and match mate, I suggest you go this route for the ultimate package on cable. AP 6 paddle and Helix cover code: 60-4709 (4708 is the standard one).

Mine runs a Helix 6-paddle c/w hydraulic kit - thoroughly recommended.
