  • Engine rebuild time

Evening all so I think it’s that time as after the weekend of driving the monte is looking like it’s starting to smoke blue smoke, when you come off the accelerator for abit and back on, the car has run ok over the last four years and was set up 4 years ago but never really driving hard, but as I don’t know the history of the engine before that, I am wondering if this is the time to do a full strip down?

I supposed what im asking is, do the cosworth engines really need to be build by a specialist, I have done a few engine rebuilds in the passed so have no worries there, is it just down to the getting the right machine company to do the right bits

are there any tips advice do’s or don’ts if I can rebuild it so to take 400/500 bhp I’ll be happy

    thanks
    steve

I can't see that engine would need a rebuild, are you sure it is not
    the turbo.

Check leakdown first. Sounds like turbo first as said

Sounds like above, but more so that you have an idea in your head that you want to have a play anyway I don't trust many to do machining really, so tend to use who the known tuners use for peace of mind. Quite easy to achieve 400 ans it's a nicer and more reliable all rounder to play with, also kinder to the chocolate 4x4 transmission.

I thought it was a new built engine when Paul Ripley took it back to standard.

I’m not sure if it was rebuild or just a good 4x4 engine and box fitted it’s that unknown is it best to have it all done again to make sure it will take 400/500 or risk what’s there and breaking something

for sure check the turbo, but could be even the steam seal ring?
i would check th compression ratio and if everything is fine i don't think you really need to make an engine rebuilt,

than if you want to take the opportunity to revise the whole engine is more than good

Sounds more like valve stem seals, turbo problem is normally smoke at idle once fully warmed up, when the oil is at it's lowest viscosity.
You will no doubt fined valve guide wear with the exhaust guides worn the most,
Guides will need replacing and the valve seats recut.
Might be some corrosion of the cylinder head which may need welding.
                Head will need a skim.
Chances are there will be bore wear, bore and skim block, new pistons needed.
Crank may be worn, needing a grind and a balance.
Then you have water pump, oil pump, clutch etc etc
And so it goes on, the job will escalate even with a near standard specification build.

Check your breather system isn't blocked/ chocked and the PCV valve is free from oil. It might be sucking in oil from the PCV system if the engine isnt breathing correctly?
