  • General Question - Importing to the US

Since recently discovering THE Escort RS Cosworth,(talk about love at first sight). I’ve been searching for one to purchase. This is my first attempt at purchasing a car from overseas and has been interesting thus far.

Over the last couple of months I’ve used google/Apple translators more then ever. What a tool!

I’ve not quite settled on a specific car but have a few in mind.

One of the questions I have for my fellow enthusiast, What is the deal with VAT? Would that apply to someone like myself who is shipping the the car out of the country? If it’s a private sale or dealer does that force the collection, Is the advertised price required to include? A few of the cars say VAT included. Even after doing some research, I’ve yet to reach a definitive answer.
I’ve located several options in Europe and hope to approach these with the facts.

I’m specifically looking for a LHD that is extremely clean with low miles.

Any insight would be helpful and greatly appreciated.

    Regards,
    Geoffrey

    Welcome to the forum.

No experience with a whole car, only parts.

A private individual (not a business) does not remit VAT to the government on sale of their personal goods. So the price is the price.

A company that is registered for vat should be able to export excluding vat. I've heard it is possible to draw back VAT upon export, but have no idea how that works.
    Cheers

Before importing one from Europe, I recommend contacting Jason at Northwest European just outside of Seattle. www.nweuro.com
He has probably sold more Escort Cosworths in the US than anybody except Sun International Racing. He also owns the first of the SIR-imported cars sold in the US. Doesn't look like he has any in stock at the moment, but he has lots of contacts and is very knowledgeable. I imported mine from Germany before the 25-year exclusion. PM me with any questions and I'll try to help.

I don’t know where you searched but i’ve never seen VAT deductable Cosworth…
if you are looking for the lhd than expect to pay 50k€ for a good one and for a first paint and under100kkm than 60+k€.
If you need some help with German or any other help just pm me.
I also have a friend who can organise transport and paper work from Europe to US.

John, I definitely know acquiring parts is going to happen. I am strong believer in OEM, are there any sources you would recomend ?

Boyd, I will certainly give Jason a call. I have identified two cars and am working on putting purchases together on both.
