  • Turbo - Replace Refurb?

    Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a reputable turbo repairer/rebuilder?

Phoned a few places and had mixed responses for the T25 turbo. Some say "obsolete and should fit a T35 turbo instead", others want to know why it's failed, and and others saying they "can rebuild existing" for a price once inspected. Seems nowhere available does exchanges new for rebuilt.

    Any help appreciated.

    Paul

Thanks Manoj - spoke to Turbo Performance, very helpful. The chap was very knowledgeable and said they do a lot of Cosworth turbo rebuilds.

I gave Burton a call as well. They don't do exchange any more as they don't have rebuilt units hanging around on the shelves, so it would be a case of sending off to them, they in turn send off to a rebuilder and get it turned around in 1-2 weeks. Burton said they offer no warranty because I could go and thrash it around a race track and blow it up and expect it to be covered (?) Since they send off to a rebuilder it sounds like they're acting as a middle man and suspect they'll take a cut. The rebuild price according to their website is in region of £750.

I have to agree. Vince is the best imo. Been doing turbos for me right back when he worked for Turbo Technics in the mid 80's

I'd want to know why it's failed. As on standard or near standard car, they should last as long as the rest of the short engine.

If you don't sort why it's failed, it'll just have problems again afterwards at some point.

I know someone who used to work for Garrett, main failure causes:

              1) Debris damage impeller side

              2) Lubrication starvation

              3) Overheating

              4) Overspeed on the turbine due to boost control problems

              5) Incorrect oil grades

              They don't just 'wear out'.

Thanks for replies. I've decided to go with Turbo Performance when I can get the turbo off.

Simon, it's a fair point, the symptoms I have are, and bear in mind I'm no expert with mechanics:

                  1. oil inside the compressor wheel housing - when I take the large hose from airbox to turbo off the inside of the turbo 'inlet' is lined with oil around the compressor wheel. Guessing it's not meant to be like that so an oil seal has gone somewhere? There's no obvious blue smoke on boost but hard to see myself.

                  2. I'd say there is a couple of mm play when moving that compressor wheel front to back. There's no lateral play left to right or up down, but there is movement when you push the wheel back to the bulkhead and pull forward to slam panel. I thought any kind of play indicates some wear and tear (bearings?) - no idea?

                  3. took the car out a few months back and found that it wasn't generating much boost. Gave it a bit of stick in 4th but didn't get the expected response and gauge didn't register any boost. This could be a sticky dump valve (has had a baileys installed since before I bought it - caused no running issues surprisingly) or could be sticky actuator? Again, not sure.

I guess even if I send it off to Turbo Performance they've said they'll inspect the unit before doing anything. Whether they'll be able to give me any info on it's overall condition or not I'll have to ask.

Cossiedavid did take a quick look at the turbo when the car was last with him (few years ago now) and did think the turbo would need rebuilding at some point in the near future.

                  Thanks,

                  Paul
