I'm 29, approaching 30 all too fast .... Usual story, hated school and passed my GCSE's with all C's and a B in maths, went to college to do A levels, discovered beer, women etc, and promplty dropped out as I got a part time job cheffing. That turned into a full time job, and by 18 I was a second chef at two different places, earning £400 a week. But I was working 70/80 Hr weeks and had no life really, and no clue what I wanted to do.

So, I joined the RAF as an aircraft engineer, and have been in ever since. I have spent 10 years at RAF Lyneham working on the mighty Hercules, and to be fair have had a good time really. I have less than a year left to my 12 year exit point, and I am not sure what I want to do really.... Life has flown by, and I have had a good time, but I really want to make more ££, and IMHO the only way is to start your own business, so I am looking for ideas at the moment....

Sadly I will probably get the fear and sign back on for three years more ... I also have just started my Civil aircraft engineering licences, as that is pretty good money.

Fuck knows, I havn't got a clue what to do

I work offshore doing HVAC maintenance, been in this job 4 yrs on the same platform, bored now with it so time to change, will stay in the oil industry as thats what ive mostly done all my career in various rolls, did a 2yr stint with the Nhs manufacturing artificial limbs!

Currently Retraining to hopefully be a Offshore crane operator, not the cheapest to do but fits in nicely with my 2weeks on 2weeks off rotation, really easy life-good money-world wide shortage, just getting into it is the trouble, my old man works for the biggest crane company in aberdeen so getting him to pull a few strings.

I am an Emerging Markets Bond Broker. I LOVED school and was straight A student through GCSEs and A levels I was expected to be either a pro rugby player or athlete at one point... but I ran out of talent at University and so didnt really know what I wanted to do then! other than earn lots of money.... I thought about Policeman or PE teacher but money is soooo crap... so decided to try my luck in the city!
I Joined ICAP straight from University and have worked on the same desk ever since. I am 34 now and absolutely LOVE my job. I work with some of my best friends (one of who is my boss!) We have a wicked laugh everyday and its manic and mental and stressy and crazy and loud! but I really enjoy that! it adds to the fun!!!!

I get to do some simply amazing things outside of work through my job.

Only downside is that I was a 13 stone athlete when I joined.... I am now a 18.5 stone Hippo!!!!

Thats the downside of eating in amazing restaurants almost every night

So absolutely NO regrets here at all! I would do it all again exactly the same! BUT I would eat less and be alot smarter with my money at the beginning.

I knew there was things i wanted to do/own in life and that salary was not going to cut it!
So handed in my notice on a full time job with paid leave/sickness etc to try contract pipefitting on the petrochemical side of things in an Exxon Mobil refinery in Fawley. It was ok for a while and the plan was that i'd been promised to be taken on full time with exxon mobil as a pipefitter as my dad was a supervisor for them and pulled a few strings, so then id be full time and have perks of pension/shares etc etc which is all top notch with Exxon, but that was a year away and i thought could be risky waiting.
By chance advert was on the radio for Exxon Mobil process operators, with 3 days to go to submit cv's i though why the feck not. Done this and got through the 4 interviews from about 2500 people (down to 25) and then got the job along with the other 24 guys.
Since then gone up and now run the control panel (been here 4 years) which is a pritty hardcore job which envolves running parts of the oil refinery and i love it (importing crude oil ships @ 10,000m3/hr dont close that valve), awsome final salary pension with most leaving at 55 years old and great pension scheme, so im over the moon

                  Essay over!
My m8 works at fawley he is a systems engineer Dave Richardson from up north we grew up together, he lives in hythe, nice place..

Steve, that name sounds familiar! I will ask around when im back in, That was the other draw of the process job, you work less than 6 months of the year, i would find it very hard to go back to a 5 day a week job.
I live about 15mins from Hythe small world!

Completely missed this thread- although not too sure how!
For my sins I work for Shell Trading in london (and, no, before people ask, I don't get discounted petrol ) - currently on the operations side of the north sea crude oil desk (and do 2 of the BFOE grades incase anyone else is in the industry.. - but not Forties.... yet)- so have lots of "fun" checking contracts, ensuring we price stuff (ie hedge) crude correctly, ensure all of the cargoes we move around are documented correctly (As i'm sure Jase can appreciate how much of a PITA customs can be), and then actually directing vessels etc... The job is actually really wide ranging, and we work very closley with both physical, and paper traders, as well as our refinery planners
Best bit about the job is you can always be pretty sure that no one day is going to be like the next - Like Porkie, I'm pretty fortunate in that we have a great team at work and all get on very well, although that may well change as two of the guys are moving onto physical trading desks shortly...

Not too sure where I'll end up in a year or 2... Time will tell!

first off well done paul on passing your gas safe as i have done that 4 times now and it dont get any easyer as time goes on

for me i did well at school and got very good grades but didnt know what to do with them, my dad was a plumber and said to me, well come with me and see how it goes as if you dont like it you can go do something else and you can allways fall back on to it if need be. so off i went and did my city and guilds 5 year training and must say i found i liked it and was very good at it, so good infact that i came in the top 3 in the country any way i worked along side my dad for a little over 10 years untill he decided to pack it in i then carried on and built the firm up and employed a few other plumbers for about 6 years doing some big jobs along the way but right now its just me and to be fair i like it like this as things as far easyer most days and the money is still good but its hard work but i do injoy my job and can only thank my dad for talking me into it

I loved school aswell and always had very good grades. Only problem was I never had to study to get them. That meant I didn't stand a chance at Uni and "ended up" with a bachelor degree in Computer Science. I was actually quite good at it as it's not something you mostly have to learn by hart but have to understand.
Found the perfect IT-job 5 years ago: close at home, money was ok-ish, lot's and lot's of budget and freedom to try and do new things and I got along very well with my other IT-colleague. But 1,5 years ago he left the company and now I'm stuck with a colleague who's character is completely opposite to mine which makes it difficult if not impossible at times.
                              Bye bye motivation
So now I'm stuck in the same boat as Neil: I want to see what else is out there and perhaps try something completely different as this "counting down the-hours-till-4/the-days-till-friday" really isn't me and is putting me down bigtime.

Ive been in engineering since leaving school, 38 now, did an apprenticeship at Royal Ordnance in Nottingham that made guns as a machine operator and was there for 8 years. Gone now, its a Focus do it all. Shame as it was a great laugh and good money for the job type.

Im now working for Rolls-Royce (Aero, not cars) at Hucknall as an inspector and I work in the area that makes parts for the Eurofighter Typhoon engines. Its ok and the money was good but the company are suffering from the current economic situation and orders have been put back by airlines so ive lost the continental style shifts which I loved and had to go Monday to Friday and had a wage drop of £5k as from January of this year because of the change of shifts. This is killing me at the moment, so much so that im going to have to sell my RS2k as I cant afford to have 4 cars anymore, but at least im still employed.
