  • Question on lowering springs

Hi folks, right then, I've just put the Engels wheels on my car today. The car is running standard shocks which look in good nick (the car has done 36k genuine miles). Now there is plenty of clearance between the front shock cups and the wheels with the standard shocks on.
I know from painful experience that you have to frig around with Konis to get clearance for 18 inch wheels and there's been people having issues with Konis on here lately, and the standard Ford shocks obviously are decent quality.

What I want to know is, are there any issues with fitting lowering springs with standard shocks? I know it won't be as tight handling as with Konis, but it's not that massive an issue to me at the moment, I think it would look better lowered down a bit though, and I like the fact there aren't the clearance issues as with front Konis.

Can you get the standard shocks new now by the way (or is that a daft question)?
    Cheers
    Trev.

Not sure on this but think lowered springs will reduced lifespan of standard shocks, and did exactly that for me years ago.

The issues with the Konis have been resolved - all the later ones are how they should be (just ask Cosmo, he had a set a couple of weeks ago ).

Obviously you still have to tweek the spring cups though....

The AHmed springs only lower the Escort by 10mm at the front and 20mm at the rear, so you could see?

Nordschleife, there's only two barriers to worry about - the ones on the left and the ones on the right .

I'm tempted to go that way Mike. And it would get me back on the road for this year without too much expense, when I've got my spoilers as well of course. I shall have a think.

Bugger, meant to update the suspension thread, but I still had too elongate the holes 8mm in the tags, but the bottom of the struts locate far better in the hub carrier on the new ones as the old ones I took off were like a turd in a hatbox as they say, and have a more pronounced bigger shoulder on them.

If I went even lower than the Ahmeds would that prove problematic on standard shocks?
At the moment the way it looks I would like to go lower than 10mm front 20mm rear. Although it might settle a bit because it obviously hasn't been driven since coming off the jack.

I'd say it's going to drop a bit when you move / drive it fella for certain.

Check out the neg camber on the rear wheels.

Pic below is mine on original standard shocks with lowered springs. Can't remember how much they lowered it by but I got them from Graham Goode.

Now that's the look I'm after. I'll have a look at the GGR site. Have you got any side views of it Andy i.e. looking straight side on to it?

Graham Goode only seem to be selling EIBACH ones for the Escort Cossie. I wonder if it's those. It does have a similar stance to RSNISSANs one, and I know that's what he was running.

Yes that's what I been told, the reg gives it away a bit.

                          Best side view I have.

Not sure of the make, just checked the invoice I got and it doesn't specify the manufacturer. There again it was 1997 when I bought them. The codes still the same thou GGR018 and the price. They'll will be coming of the car in the next few weeks if you want a second hand set.

Found them by code mate, what was the price, can't seem to find that. I guess they must be a GGR own product, or one made for them. Think I might go for a new set if anything, because I think after 13 years they might be getting a bit tired.

Are there any issues you've found when driving it with those springs on? Do you get any knocks or bangs or anything?
                              Cheers
