  • remote oil filter + oil cooler

Now ive got my engine together its a bit buisy under the inlet manifold and if i ever wanted to do any work under there (its bound to brake so ill have to one day ) it will be a nightmare.

So what do i need to fit a remote filter?

And whilst im at it, is it a good idea to get rid of the standard oil cooler? How good is it and will it make a difference if i dont run one at all or can i run a mocal one in line with the oil filter?

Mike R says the mocal cooler is equivilent to a 16 row air to air cooler so youd need a bigger one than that to see any cooling benefit.

i know what you mean about a nightmare under the inlet, i hate it its such a bitch to work on.. ive been looking into this for ages but no one seems to know anything about them..

what i want to do with mine is remove the 4x4 oil filter arm and put a oil take off plate on top of the orignal oil to water heat exchanger, then run off to a remote filter and bolt that to the front passenger chassis leg so the thread of the oil filter relocator is facing the ground

then i want to put another take off plate on top of my oil filter relocator with a stat then run 2 hoses from the second take off plate along the top of the rad to a oil cooler which i would bolt where the horn are... this way theres no need to fit a another washer bottle..

i think this is a good way to do it, because you keep the original heat exchanger the oil filter would be in a easy place to get to, it could be changed just by reaching through the passenger wheel arch , plus the oil cooler would only work when its needed as its on stat, plus if you look where the horns are there loads of room for a cooler..

the problem i have is no one seems to know what size hose the system needs to have and what size threads in the take of plates are exeptable for a big power yb..

Hmmm, dash 8 should be plenty big enough for it i recon? i just need to find a plate to fit over the standard heat exchanger then, and like you say dom run the pipes to the chasis leg

ill look into it a bit more

well mate i'll tell you everything i know so far...

the thread size for the take off plate needs to be 3/4" to fit on the yb...

as its a 3/4 inch thread the od of the thread is 19.05 so the id where the oil flows through would need to be something like 17mm this is what the yb allows as standard ..

so working on the basis the for the oil to flow the same as standard the hose would need to have a 17mm id..

              heres the hose options
              -8 is 11.12mm id
              -10 is 14.32mmid
              -12 is 17.33mm id

so to me it looks like -12 is the one we need as it has the same id as the standard hole through the thread as on the where the original oil filter screws on..

then looking at the sandwich plates they offer the tapped thread size options

1/2" 12.7mm od which would be probley 10mm id for the oil to flow through
5/8" 15.7mm od which would be probley 13.5mm id for the oil to flow through
m18x 1.5 thread which is 17.9mm thread so the id once a adaptor is fitted would be 15mm

so i'm thinking the set up we need is sandwich plate with a centre thread of 3/4 unf with m18 tapping, then fit m18 to -12 adaptors then buy -12 elbows fitting onto -12 oil hose then the same in reverse at the oil cooler/ relocator...

                Its sounding complicated

                http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/REMOTE-OIL-FIL...item1c1340d6b6

i was looking at that, the filters are the same fitting as a zetec im sure, and that might fit ok with the engine mount aswel

-12 is huge though isnt it?

Mike did a pretty informative post a while back on this, but i can't find it. I'm sure he said that unless you are seeing oil temps over a certain level on an accurate gauge then you'll not need an oil cooler.

As for his whereabouts hes prob either give Jim photography lessons or updating his website.
