what would you actually do with it though? it must be one of the lowest milers around, and 100% orig and you wouldnt want to pay 40k and risk having a prang or putting on the miles so its either a trailor job which would defeat the object or a museum piece
suppose you could do standard concourse in it and piss everyone else off with their restored orig examples if it was half price id be very tempted lol

Thats the problem though,i remember back in the 90's a guy called llyod(not gerrald..ha!) that had an unregisterd white 53 mile RS500 and i remember the stick/bitchyness he got off the concours boys,in theory that car,if entered should have walked it,but in reality a 67,000 mile car with shiny brake discs and a bunch of mirrors will always get the nod......seems wrong to me!

Robski thats the problem with showing cars off in concours comps, you get opinionated knobbers spouting crap. i would rather have a 197 miler to show off in concours than a 67k miler as there is a huge difference between used and unused cars. The carpets seats glass and paint all look fresher imo.
i reckon someone wanting a ornament will buy it with a reasonable cheeky offer and just sit on it.

Its not a story mate,i saw the car and spoke to the guy on numerous occasions in the 90's.
The car and guy were totally genuine,i don't think he was an RSOC member,he stayed away from all that stuff.
He was a real RS500 buff and knew the in's outs on the cars and his actual car and even the distance Tickford travelled on thier test route after the it was prepped.
Remember these were the days before the internet and he actually went out and researched/spoke to people from Tickford and such like...unlike these days when everyone just google's facts etc.

I remember he had some really good offers on it and was tempted,i know he wanted an RS200 and was undecided what to do....also he was tempted to register it in 98 to get a plate the was close to RS500 as he could get...but we kept telling him that would be madness.
Then again, i could see his point in someways, the car had to be trailered every where, every time a mile went on he felt sick lol...also i remember he had to have the tyres sent away for some treatment...due to the car standing in one place for so long.

I stopped doing the whole show thing in the late 90's and never saw the guy again,he may still have it.....but i doubt it.

I'm sure my mate may even have some pictures of it,as he always had a camara with him at the shows,i must see if he has any.

Totally agree with you mate, the interior on this car was amazing...along with window rubber etc...like you said i'd rather have a 197 miler than a gold gup winning car.

i should say i have seen cars that have been used and have so much moola spent on them that they do look like fresh cars but when you get clicks that know each other a new face sometimes doesn't fit in and the bitchyness sets in as you can't always win with a restored or minted up car.
Anyone who remembers the Patels RS's know a fully restoed RS that was like brand new couldn't beat their cars as they were established winners and original minters not done up.
Wonder where Patel went too and RUD1T

Remember seeing a mk2 rs 1800 possibly with the reg bda1t in the car park out at the 'ring about ten years ago.

North London mate,Finchley to be precise! The RS scene was huge around here, back in the day! Plenty of decent RS's tucked away back then and still now!
Regarding the 500 i mentioned,i remember Enfield pagent one year where he bought the car up and left it in the field/park far away from all the main stands,he wasn't a show off and liked to stay away from the main crowd of back slappers!

Maybe my earlier post was a tad confusing,he never entered any concours etc,i just remember seeing certain people that i knew where doing concours and sitting there picking at the finish etc....its a Ford FFS..lol

Loads of stories from the good old days that stick to my mind.....did you hear about the light weight mk 1 mexico that ford tracked down and offered the owner any new car from the Ford fleet plus cash?.....this was again in the late 90's maybe early 00's

Oh i totally agree with you with all the old concours crowd, was like the mason's...outsiders wouldn't get a sniff and the Patels generally won all the time, saying that,he has some incredible cars...especially that mk2 mex,i'm sure it still had the plastic on the rear seats and door cards..

don't forget the original ford wheel weights on the original wheels with original tyres lol.

a bloke i knew from winsford restoed a mk2 Rs mexico and tbh did a belting job,he used to work for withers of winsford building and running some of the best rally escorts many ex works bitd and certainly knew how to put new innerwings and other panels into a car correctly. His was a stunner after it was finished and was a one owner before him never been tampered with car that needed work but not been messed around with before so it went back together as it was supposed to and it couldn't win because everyone knew that the Patels mex was a original mint car.
Thats how it was buy the best original car and sit back and relax knowing your RS was superior i suppose.
