  • can you powder coat your sump or is it best to paint it?

just had my cossie 4x4 sump big winged by mk motorsport

he bead blasted it for me to clean it all off etc but now i think id like it painted/powder coated black or grey,

would the powder coat survive the temp of the oil etc

    thanks Marc

Powder coat is baked on @ 200 degrees, so oil heat won't touch it You will need to remove anything that will melt such as oil seals for the driveshaft, etc. I would have it coated instead of painted

Personally I would have it sprayed Mark.

I have had a few things powder coated in the past and its never the best to holding upto extreme temps that can build up in an engine bay and also to certain fluids.

If for instance you drop some coolant, brake fluid or even for example spray brake cleaner on or near it.
This has always dulled or stained the coating on mine.

I now have it painted at body shop and lacquared.. drop anything on it and it wipes off ( brake cleaner thinners etc)
Also with powdercoating when it gets hot it softens.
So if you do make sure you put some threadlock on the bolts!

Good point about thread lock on the bolts if it softens off luke as they will soon ratle loose I spose

just think the time and cost to paint is nearly twice as much

You need to find a painter that loves a cash / lunch job!

i did all this in normal straight colour:

trick to getting it to last is good prep, clean so nothing to contaminate, good etch primer, then I put flexibliser in the paint (like you use on plastics), as this allows it to expand with heat and not crack or split. I've painted hundreds of items over the years, never had one issue. Even the cylinder head and block on the above were done and they were fine after 10k miles, pretty sure the car is still going now too.

It's aluminium, why would you want to paint it - are you a homosexual?

                        ^^^^

Was easier to keep clean once painted
