  • Tech Question - Ok peeps, help me solve my hot running/fans issue!

I'm fucking determined to fix this bloody escort and tax it for September ...

Right. Engine rebuilt, so that is all perfect, so no crack/ headgasket worries.
Car drives ok, runs very slightly above the R in NORM whilst driving along. As soon as you stop, the temp rises, and the fans don't kick in.

The fans work when the switch is bridged, so shows the wiring/relay is ok. Brand new rad fanswitch, so that rules that out. Fans work when you turn the air con on....

The only thing I can think is the rad is slightly blocked, not allowing water to the switch? But water pissed out when I changed the switch?!

Is the rad getting hot all over? wrong temp fan switch? How many switches have you tried as this maybe faulty even tho its new.

do you have a infra red temp gun ??
if so check the temp of the rad all over to make sure the coolant is circualting correctly
it sounds like your water isnt circulating wil

is it realy getting hot you may have a dodgy temp sender

        5 things i would check ...
        1. is it really getting hot ?..could be faulty temp gauge sender unit ....
2.blocked up rad causing no circulation ...
        3.check themostat...
        4.fan switch and associated wiring
        5.air lock in cooling system

Temp sender is brand new, yes it gets very hot if left unchecked. Brand new thermostat, so prob not that.. Imgoing to run it on Friday and see if the rad is getting hot all over. Is the cars STD rad so prob been in years. Bled the system as well, and the fans have been proven, just won't come in automatically...

So, think it's rad check first, then maybe a new fan switch again?!

Could be the fan relay, I've got the same problem on my Saph. I eventually wired a desperate relay/ switch in to the fans. So now they are independant and come on when I want them too.

If you bridging the switch and the fans come on the all the wiring and relay is fine

A friend of mine fitted a new fan switch and it was a faulty one

What you could do is drop the switch connected into a bowl then add boiling hot water and see what happens.

I think your find its the rad thats had it

              Cheers

Had the same problem, you cant test the damm swithch with hot water? I used a hot air gun ( on the the old sensor) fans kicked in, replaced the sensor same problem, link them and they turn on, replaced the radiator, and made sure there was no air in the system and hey presto they cut in. I have trawled the net for this problem, one chap mailed me, his problem was with the expansion tank, the srew on top was leaking , bought a new one rad pressure ok and hey presto fans working, hope this helps.

that will be the rad switch or thermostat if 1 sides getting hot ie the pipes that come off rad if driverside 1 is cold as temp rises its thermostat if rad and both rad hoses are hot its rad fan switch

or poss water pump gone meaning its not circulating the water but you can check that simple enough by unscrewing the header tank cap (not when hot tho) and hold the throttle open a bit and if its circulating it will squirt water back into the header tank from turbo return, i would also change the header tank cap aswell as a precaution these get left all the time as a simple thing like that can cause air to be forced back down the hoses etc if its not releaseing the pressure when hot

releasing pressure when hot andy ?????
the cap is designed to release pressure over 15lb of pressure and if its getting that pressureised there is a problem

the cap wont release presure under any other condition unless its fooked

                        just to clarify the cap

Everything is brand new, apart from the rad... Going to start it in a min, run it and see how we get on.. I'm concerned the stat isn't working, even though it's brand new as well!
