  • clutch advice for 500+ bhp, alcon, AP

having done a search on this ther seems to be mixed views on th alcon and AP 6 paddle clutches, some saying alcons dont last long and some regarding to the AP being harsh and juddrey. from personal views who recomends wich one the best before i shell out for a new one, for car over 500bhp witch wil be useing a hydraulic conversion. and lastly best place to buy from? cheers.

an AP 6 paddle will be man enough for the job, to save the worry of it being harsh or heavy then go for the hydraulic clutch conversion which your already thinking of.

it will be nice and light and strong enough for the job.

for the hydraulic side of things its got to be Martoon.
for the clutch itself then the usual suspects all pop up, its just down to who you wish to give your money to

Im using the AP 6 paddle on my rwd mk4 it has over 450bhp with no issues and esc cos has the same but with only 400bhp . The rwd mk3 has a Helix 6 paddle setup

I stock the AP, and Helix Kit off the shelf, lowest price you will find in the UK if it helps.

I've got a normal cable operated clutch and had an Alcon 6 paddle on the car........ i loved it judder was bare minimum and the pedal was no problem even in London at rush hour........ but it broke wasn't even giving it any beans at the time, just leisurely came off a roundabout and it went crunch and left me with no drive thought the gearbox had broke again but it was the clutch...... and it was little more than half worn

So replaced it with AP 6 paddle.......... and i don't love it Pedal weight is exactly the same so no issue there but the judder is a pig ........ and it really makes some weird noises aswell lol.

I could go hydraulic but i don't see the point as the pedal weight isn't an issue for me and i really can't see that it would make any difference to the judder as that's down to the clutch itself......... nothing to with wether the lever is pulled by a cable or pushed by fluid

If i could turn back the clock i would put another Alcon in and just hope that i was unlucky with the other one....... and i would keep the receipt

All that said, i have to a degree learn't to live with the AP as there is a little bit of a technique that i've kind of mastered for pulling away and keeping the judder to a minimum.......... it's hard to explain but involves a bit of throttle blip before de-clutching etc.if you put one on you'll probably develop something similar Trouble is it's one of those things you can't get right every time

On the upside i don't worry about it failing so doesn't add to my general Cossie paranoia.......... plenty of other stuff to worry about though

I have a AP 6 paddle clutch and a heavy duty cover and i wouldnt recommend it without hydraulic. yes you get "used" to it (as you end up walking in circles ).

cossiecrazy (and all his mechanics) will testify how nasty it is with the heavy duty cover.

                    Medically Discharged!! Officially insane!!!

You're not a fan of the hydraulic clutch though are you Mark............ or so i seem to remember you saying

So i presume you only put them on your cars if the customers ask for it ?

got the alcon clutch and cover in mine and its been fine so far but i am on my second one but the first one didnt brake it was just worn down, but next time it needs replacing then i am going to get the box converted to run the hydraulic clutch and maybe go AP

Did you have the fly-wheel surface ground before fitting the new clutch, as it is IMPERATIVE that you do so (otherwise you get the issues you describe).

Hydraulic conversion MAKES the car so much easier to live with that I would say it is an ESSENTIAL conversion and should have been how the car came out of the factory.
