  • Power Power Power Some answers please??

    Hi,
What is the consensus these days about the max amount of power an Escort( big turbo model) engine and transmition can handle.
Can anyone give some working examples.
    ie:
What mod's to engine, turbo & boost etc
What box & Clutch You use?
    What Diffs are you running?
    Running gear, shafts cv's etc.

Can they be made to run mechanically reliable??

Forgive me , I have been out the cosworth scene for too long.
I stopped because of some of the issues that arouse from the questions above.

        Thats what I thought.
As you can probably tell my mind, not that there is much of it< is in turmoil.

I want another Escort with 550 bhp but I dont want a streight cut box.
I dont mind spending some cash on the project, but want to be able touse the car every day 365.
Who on the forum has such a car. 500/550 bhp big tooth box and completely road friendly?? I would love to chat.
My last was a car I built myself as a rally car. When I finished rallying I converted it to a road car. which although looks cool, sounds cool, is not really very suitable.
I want to be able to put the kids in tha back should the next IVF Cycle work but when on my own have some fun or even have a track day.

i gather this wud be for a road car? my old set up was t34.63 housing, 3 bar map sensor, big intercooler, 3" exaust, msd chip , siemens 55lb injectors, etc, it ran 2.2 bar and was great for a road car, standard head and compression, gearbox and diffs standard with just uprated cluch estimated around 380 bhp went very good, i believe a safe figure is around 350 bhp and a good stage 3 set up shud be reliable.

i dont think a 500+ car would be an everyday car, maybe lower the figure to 350 and you will have a reliable car,

350 will still give you quite a kick, remember these cars came out the factory at about 225 so 500 is more than double than it was designed for and if you want that you would need a very good bank balance

mine 450bhp on 2wd running gear and i would happily pick up 4 other people and drive all the way to the spain with out even lifting the bonnet first... i use my car all the time with no issues, its how you spec it... my last cossie was super realiable as well and now ive worked on my friends saph and helped him get the right bits on there he now drives 70miles a day to work in to no problems..

may sure you get a hydro clutch as the cables are so weak! that will save 2 breakdowns in a year straight away! i done 2 in a week once,

                      Cheers ,
I had a 4x4 Sapphire with the same set up a while ago now running a standard MT 75 box. A T 35 ( hybrid turbo, 360 & cut backs with a .61 housing) It was great, if I sell my modded 911 Turbo which has 530bhp 550 ft/lbs torque I would want similar from the Escort.
I did price the 550 set up from Specialist Car Services and that would be right down my street. I just dont want to have to be replacing running gear & boxes every few months.
I had this crazy idea that technology had moved on and made the Escort much more reliable. I do hope so.

If you dont abuse the gearbox yo wont have problems with a good gearkit, If you want to do lots of launchs then you spec the parts diff but this will increase the costs.

Yes, well remembered and I still have all your information in my desk. The problem is 2 fold.
1 , the residual in the 911 and the Balloon to pay off versus 2.The fact we are trying for a baby. 6th IVF attempt. I have got to keep moving forward with power. A bit of a power junkie I am afraid and the 911 isn't really suitable for kids.
The Escort could very much solve the problem I have.
Unfortunately I have also had all the Cosworth range of cars except the RS500 and I know they can be trouble. I did get rid of one for a Porsche, talk about "out of the frying pan and into the fire".
Shit, why are Cosworths so captivating.

I hope you are doing well, you never know you might be seeing me, I will just have to see what happens. I have enjoyed these last few days oreading back through as many posts on here as I can, puts some fire in my belly ( which unfortunatly isn't getting any samller)
