  • r5 gt turbo problem help needed

Cracked piston liner what would be the cause?

    spec

turbo: Garret T25 (running at 10 psi)
Carb: Group A (dont know jet sizes)
    ajustable timing sensor
    Forge double capacity intercooler
    Gruop A head gasket
    Head bolt kit
    Blitz 4 stage boost controller

whats the best relible spec for these is there any REALLY good thing or things are a must have on these?

cracked liner would be caused by det, so its runing lean when on boost which most of them do being a single carb and weird way of working

    edit got engines confused lol

its the clio williams engine that people put in, or a volvo turbo lump ithink

Go on www.gtoc.org iirc as it's the 5 Owners club. They should be able to help with best mods/specs

check it hasn't got a blocked rad causing overheating, although i'd have thought if it was that then the headgasket or head would have let go first.

Its an old engine, so it could just be fatigue unless its happened more than once which as said could be detonation.

          Craig,

Drop DaveEsccos a pm about it, he used to work for BB tuning who's main thing was the R5 turbo's. If he don't know then i'm sure he will know someone who does

Cracked liners is down to detonation, nothing else can cause it.

Id reccomend you chuck that double cap intercooler as they are worse (less efficent) then even the stock coolers. A good quality (Pace products make the best ones) I/C single core is miles better then that one.

Also, the carbs are amazingly tepremental. The last brand new R5 carb was sold I think over ten years ago. Since then, they have been corroding and failing like made and repair kits can only do so much.

Get it to good locla RR and set the boost and the fuelling for around 160-180hp, a good engine should be happy all day long at this level.

Lastly, sell off the stupid Blitz thing. Never in my life seen one work properly. Swap it out for an incar valve and set a max limit on it so you can't over boost it and go back to square one

If he wants some lower comp pistons mate I can help you out with those. Tell him also to stay away from Steel liners. The material is too harsh on the rings and kills them very quickly. Only way around this is to coat the liners and as the cheapest place ive found that does this charges £200 + per liner, its unlikely the sets on the market for £300 per set including liners are coated.

Alternately tell him to get rid, spend 3k on a 172, 1k to get it up to 200hp then enjoy the reliability, better handling, flexibility of the engine and 35 plus mpg
