Chris, just spotting the location in your name.
You live were myself and the misses have just moved from earlier in the year.
If you need a local hand when looking at cars then give me a shout and I'll try to help, misses family is still in the Merstham area.

All I can say is that 50k on an escort is far to easy to do

thing is, we all want.....wanted a car that was nice and standard ish...then as time goes by and we get used to it etc...we want more power and more mods, then were happy for a bit, then we want more again.

thats when we all look back and say the things thats being said on this thread....buy modded.

            good luck with your search.

            Dave.

Deffo buy one that someone else has spent cash on.

I would wait for a good one to come up on here , as there is a lot of shit on ebay . Try to get one from somone known in the scene if that is possible as you will know abit more about the car and the owner tbh. The owner is as important as the car when i look to buy , i know within seconds of meeting somone if they are the sort of person who i'd give my hard earned cash over to.

Dont get me wrong tho, there are very little 100% mint cars out there now so if your not prepared to deal with a few issues buy another type of car .

I'm gonna go against the flow here and say buy standard if you can afford then modify it, that way you know it'll be how YOU want it not how someone else wanted it. One mans modded properly is another mans bodge job plus if you buy a well known modded car it'll always be referred to as 'oh isn't that such and such's old car' and that would really knob me off.

well i didnt want a standard one as ive modded a few car,s in the past & its cost me loads as i cant do it myself so i waited for the right car & jumped on it strait away no messing., ie it had the alloys i wanted, morretts, right colour & ggr 305 convertion & loads of shiney bits under the bonnet that i could probley never afford to do & it had decent milage & owned the last 12years, had to spend an xtra £800 over my budget & sort the fuse box[got money off the car for that] but in the long run im much better off & all i gotta do now is a service it & a bit of paintwork & its sorted....im well happy

surely that depends on who has done the work and the inspection you carry out on the car?? if its got a pile of reciepts from a reputable tuning garage and the guy hasnt been tempted to "up the boost" etc on his own then you should be alright.

If I was to do it again I'd buy one that has the Brakes & Suspension done but standard engine, I think engine tuning is a very personal choice.

we pay our money & we take our chance me thinks & with only 1200 left the pickings will only get slimmer & surly there cant be many standard one,s left & the ones that are, are expensive, i spoke to graham goode racing as they did the mods on mine & its all on record there, ive got a folder full of receipts, all service history with everything thats been done to the car plus all the mots to back up the milage plus top bloke mark barber had a good look around it aswell before i brought it & did a fresh m.o.t, plus ian who i brought the car off was very passionate about the car which i think is a good thing, i didnt want a high miles car either so its a gamble what ever you buy, i brought mine to keep so i know this will be the only escort cosworth ill ever own, so if it wasnt mallard green or impirial blue st i wouldnt go & view it because i didnt want to be tempted & regret it every time i saw an impearial blue or green one, i nearly went to view a petrol blue at £9500 with 108k & weighed up the cost of modifying it & it worked out more than the one ive brought, plus the one ive ended up with only has 52k & its a colour i wanted so i think ive got the best car,[ in my opinion] with the money i paid & with eveything allready done & im over the moon with it........good luck with your hunt fella....

Yes everything 'should' be alright but how can you tell if it's been tampered with afterwards?

Receipts are only useful to give an idea of the kind of work that's been carried out imo, they certainly shouldn't be taken as gospel that everything is tickety boo, just ask Bullet about that.

MOT's are a perfect example, it could pass with flying colours one day but fail miserably a couple of months later.

As we all know these things cost a fortune to mod properly so who in their right mind is gonna spunk a shit load of cash modding a cossie and then sell it while it's in tip top condition unless their getting top dollar?

Still makes sense to buy standard and then mod to your own taste.

                            All IMO of course
