  • Why is there so many replica's?

Just saw an Esc Cos replica for sale on PassionFord and am curious as to why so many people have gone to the effort of making replica's of the Esc Cos? If it was just a body kit fine, but it's wings front and rear, interior, etc.

What car has the most replica's?

i guess its a form of flattery shame the escos replicas are all gay wheel drive insults to the originals.
thing is, the escos cant even be properly copied with a YB in it etc.

At least many kit cars try to keep authenticity to a point.

Id imagine the lotus 7 is probably the most replicated car.

it was prob an insurance issue back in the day although the amount they spend trying to build a good copy could have prob insured a real one twice

what i dont get is why i get asked if mine is real all the time but when i had the saff no-one questioned it? the saff is far easier to replicate but wasnt done as often as the escort.

ferrari and lamborghini have to be the most copied surely? they do 360 conversions to pug 406's nowdays tbh with what it cost them you could go buy a real 348 and own a proper ferrari.i know what i would rather!!

I think because the Escos is so rare, or at least the amount you see on the road and with there being quite a few reps about people will think it's a rep..

Think yourself lucky though, I went in my local shell garage yesterday and behind the counter to serve me was a black (not that it matters) lad who sounded French. He was around 20yrs old. I went to pay for my Vpower and he said, "is it a Citroen" you what I said "is it a Citroen" are you having a laugh I replied it's a Escort Cosworth, a real car, I wouldn't buy French crap they have never been able to make a car. Well, that killed the conversation.

As for replicas, I think if there are loads of reps you know you have a true Icon.

One of the most popular reps must be the AC Cobra theres loads of them about.
I did see a couple of Esc Cos reps years ago but have not seen any for a while.
Come to think of it I have not seen a Esc Cos for a few years apart from mine but I have not been to a show in 5 years

Ive never been asked if mine was a replica, but have been asked more than a few times now, "what is it?" and "have I done all that stuff to it?". Quite annoying tbh.

Theres not alot now but there used to be loads a few years back

3 of my mates had small engined mk5 escorts and that was mainly because of the low insurance group and because they could have their own insurance (not second driver crap like the kids get today)

Kit wise there were like two choices cosworth or delta and to be honest last year good escort cosworth reps were selling for £2.5k- £3.5K so if you got them looking okish the returns were good

id agree but by volume i doubt it as cobras are quite expensive for a decent one, and massively expensive compared to lotus 7 clones i mentioned.

I'm with Warren has to be the Lotus 7.

I have to say I never got the whole build a rep thing when I started driving, I still don't know where they get the money from to do it all as I never had the cash to do it, but then most of mine went to the local pub, probably would have had enough cash if I stayed out of that place lol

I guess it depends what you replicate. cossie - pointless as it will cost you more to build one that drives as good than you could buy an original.

something like a lotus 7, originals just are too rare plus theyve formed their own trackday toy market rather than being pure replicas.

cobras, GT40's, lancia stratos etc then with originals being hundreds of thousands of pounds for good original ones, you can build a replica that looks as good, drives as good and is as fast as an original for a fraction of the cost, so why not??

Although there are a couple of mental replicas out there, such as a £75k rs200 replica for hillclimbs etc and some insane F40 replica thats identical to the original in almost every way except using a later genuine ferrari engine and some modified 355 parts. (ie you scrap a 355 ) but that cost something mental like £120k. But then i guess when original F40s are soo rare you can ask for £400k plus for a mint one then i guess £120k on a replica that drives as good and can be bashed about on track is "good value"

I remember years ago seeing so many Cossie reps in both 3dr and Sapphire, some really good ones as a Sapphire is simple to replicate to look genuine but the Escos was always different, it had to be done down to the last detail to pull it off - the ride height and positioning of the rear wheels always gave it away, to think many would have been stolen to build these cars

my mate had ones years ago, all genuine panels fitted to it aswell, from a distance it looked very good, the only down side was the front wheels to far back in the wings becuase genuine wings were used

i bought one years ago, paid £100 for it lol, geuine bumpers, spoliers, skirts, bonnet, interior the lot, had rst lump aswell, i blew engine up after 6 months and sold it my mate for £1500 who just put a std engine in to run it around, think it went to a breaker after that

i crn wait for mine to be finished to ask if its a rep or not lol, im fedup of my xr4x4 asking if its a cossie all the time aswell, as soon as that engne is in i can say yes

MARTJ on here had a decent rep, you had to look closely to tell it wasn't real.
