  • Tech Article - My ECU questions.

OK here goes, i would like to start upgrading my ECU. And possibly power output of my engine. At the moment it is stage 3, about 330BHP.
At the moment it has a 3 bar MAP sensor, Light blues, Mountune chip on a pectel board, RS 500 style intercooler, 3 inch decat exhaust .
I will put up some pics of the ECU with the cover off it.
Here in OZ we dont have very many people that are able to work on cosworth Engines and ECU,s .
Later this year i will be coming to the UK for a holiday, would it benifit me to bring my ECU over with me. and get the upgrades done and mapped over there, then fitting it back on the car when i get back. Or buy one already done, or change the ECU all together to an after market one that can be mapped here in OZ, if so what would be the best one to look at.
What would be the best to do?
I would like to start with wasted spark, and anti lag. May also look at launch control, can it be turned off like the anti lag? Dont know much about the launch control but if im getting an antilag chip i may just pay the extra and have the launch control as well.
Would also like a power upgrade.

If i was you i'd go aftermarket, at least then you've local support.

Antilag, there's no point unless you spend thousands on a proper system.
Wasted spark - I found no real benefit, but if you are changing to an ECU that supports it you may as well fit it.
Launch control work on my car off the handbrake switch, when it on, LC is on and the car only revs to 3K IIRC. Its good, but its hard on the transmission

Update! I have got a chip, an MSD 380bhp and siemens injectors etc etc mostly all the bits now to fit it, on there way from the UK. also got most of the wasted spark bits, what would be the best way of doing the upgrade? the 380 chip 1st or wasted spark 1st? I will do one at a time so if i have problems i can narrow it to one or the other. Also got a anti lag board, throttle body and ISCV (this needs modifying 1st) will fit this last.

I don't mean to put a dampener on things but I've had a boost/misfire problem with my MSD 380 conversion ever since it was done. Trouble is I drive it that rarely that by the time I properly noticed it there was no way of getting MSD to look at it without relieving me of more money to diagnose the problem. I spoke to Karl Norris about it and he told me the wasted spark is pretty pointless with less than 450bhp and a group a coil with good condition wiring is more than good enough. My 1st step was to change the coilpack to a good quality one rather than the crap that came with the conversion which helped loads but on track the problems persisted. My next step is to change ecu to a L8 as Karl can live map these and obviously get rid of the gremlins in the 380 chip. I don't know of anyone else with the same problems with this conversion but I've sure heard of a good few problems with MSD chips in general.

Wouldnt bother with lc or al as both are a gimick unless you go for a proper system

You've got plenty of good tuners in Austrailia and I would use aftermarked management like Vipec and have a tuner do the mapping to get the best result.
If anything happens or you need help it's there for you and not in the UK.
