  • AP Racing brake kits question

    Good Evening Gents

Just a quick question for those in the know really. Im toying with the idea of a brand new 380mm brake kit but having checked out that Norfolk blokes website along with Martoons im still a bit uncertain about the best disc/caliper combo I spent an hour or so on AP's site last night looking at the technical drawings etc and im still unsure which way to go.

I really wanted the slimline CP5555 caliper as theyre similar to my current AP 6 pots but they command a premium it seems, so is the CP7040 as good a caliper as the CP5555? If the CP5555 is the best one and i need it to fit under the wheels for clearance on the Leggeras then thats fine and the extra is justified.

I was looking at 362mm discs but i always remember when i had my old Fiesta and i went from 15" wheels to 16" wheels and i kicked myself for not doing 17" wheels, and after seeing pics of Maxest old red one on the Reyland site and Paul @ Nth Yorks white one with the 380 discs on im drawn to the bigger ones

Also they all seem to be floating in this size which i can understand but is it true how much rattle they make with the bobbins

As always guys any help is massively appreciated.

    Thanks
    Mart.

the 5555 is a far superior caliper over the 7040, its more lightweight, its alot slimmer, has more ridged strengthening across its back and utilises a much bigger pad and generates a much better clamping force.

yes it comes at a premium, but then allow into your budget that the pads will also be alot more expensive due to there shape and size.

if your purely going for the looks of having as big a brake as possible then go for the 378mm, but i only thought the 378m disc combo came as floating, so allow for these to be noisy and rattly at low speeds aswell

with knowing how you drive, a 362mm brake kit will be more than adequate for you, and then id say to save your money and go for the 7040 calipers, you can get these in red or black which will match your current style of calipers.

i had a 362mm 7040 kit on my old FRS and used it in anger for many laps around the ring and it soaked up the abuse with ease, this is obviously something you will never be doing in your car, so it will be a great kit on your car.
but then, the current brake kit on the FRS is 362mm and 5555's and they are unbelievably incredible on the road and track, i cant fault them in the slightest and they even shock me at how well they continue to bite with the DS3000 pads.

with the new Escos im going 378mm floating with 5555 calipers and 3000 pads.
you would be more than welcome to try those before you part with any money but i sense your itching NOW to get some new brakes

You sense correct mate i want the big ones im just not sure about the noise from the bobbins i may take up DaveCos offer of a wheel swap trial first i think to see what the 362mm look like behind the leggs . I will make some calls tomorrow to a few people too. Im sure 362mm would be fine but im unsure of how they would fill the wheels up in comparison to the 380mm, i think i'll nip off and try and find maxest thread of his whote one with leggs and 362mm discs. Thanks for the reply Kelv & Georgie

Just go 380mm Martin, the 362's still look a bit lost behind the 19" Superleggeras

i have 362's on mine. i was advised by ap themselves not to fit 378's on standard hubs. you could pop over to try a wheel on mine as i noticed your in crewe.

for all my tuning needs i use Turbosystems 07587188434. ask for tony

The only problem with the 380's is if you ever want to go back to 18's then you'll have to buy new discs, bells and brackets as the 380's won't fit under the majority of 18's.

I've got the 362 with the 5555 caliper and believe me mate they're more than enough for the road.

Also, I can help you with the rattly bobbins if you do go down the floating route Martin so that's nothing to worry about

Plus with the money you save in not buying the 380's you could buy yourself a new cardigan

unless your building a car for track use id avoid the floating discs i had 387 on my escos and yes the brakes are awesome but the noise is soul destroying

Cheers for all the replies Guys

Ive had a chat with Mike today and asked him to cost me up the 362 with the CP5555. I love the look of the 378mm Max i really do but like so many of you have put above, I love the leggeras to bits i truly do but whose to say that 1 day ronnies wont be back on and as mike pointed out to me they really are massive overkill for a road car and even i saw the common sense in that!
The other good thing with the 362mm in your piccy Max is that it looks like i'll still be able to get my hand through the spokes to clean the inside wheel without removing them! Really glad you put that pic up with them square on.

Mallard man thank you for the kind offer

Dave, ive added a few cardys to the collection since mate! Im never going to live that down am i

                        Cheers all
