  • any spray painters on the forum??????

as per title,i need some advice, i use a spray machine at work HVLP to spray furniture ie wood mdf.
we use water based paint but are having lots of problems and moving to acid catalysed isf coatings paint. the advice i need is cleaning my spray gun???
with water based we wash it in the sink and soak over night??

thinners and kitchen sink is a problem it stinks!!

i have a home made spray room but no sink? it has ventilation but not over night??

any advice my main concern is the fire risk soaking things in thinners in doors??

i have never used two pack and finding it very smelly but lots better finish

If you blow the gun out directly after finishing and rinse off with thinners and a brush you shouldn't need to soak anything over night .

As above, spray clean thinner's through the gun, clean out the guns paint canister and wipe clean. Put 1 or two inches of thinners in the canister and disassemble the nozzle assembly and leave in the canister over night with the gun assembly screwed back on the canister. Brush the needle valve with thinners whilst operating the trigger just to work the thinners into the needle seals.
You can make your own disposal drum using an old empty 20 lts can of thinners. just spray in short bursts into the drum lid allowing the mist to dye down. It takes for ever to fill the 20 ltr drum and it catches most of the mist from the cleaning process.
Never ever dispose of thinners down the drain.
          1 Its explosive.
2 It can melt certain types of plastic piping
          3 Its totally illegal.

Keep thinners out of the house, store in a shed or garage.

rickardo if yer spraying regularly i'd say get a decent air fed mask or atleast a top notch face mask with filtration. Doesn't your boy Bigpower still sell Paint and materials ??

i have a mate who sells all types of paints and stains thinners and laquers etc that he imports even to some very big paint manufactureres and has everything you need for wood or can advise if it helps yer

                      Georgie,
different paints different mixtures. It should say on the tin. ie 4:1 or 5:1 possible might give in percentage 10% 15% , 20% thinners etc.
most sprayers will mix the paint to their desired consistency. I use 2k in the ratio of 5:1:1 paint, hardener & thinner. I then thin down more depending on the quality / type of finish required.
