  • coolant temps??

my 3dr is got me baffled.
my ford gauge was going to 3/4 on the ford clocks and my fans are running all the time when i've been giving it a hard time.
so i've fitted a stack water temp gauge inplace of the standard ford gauge.
its showing 90 degrees on cruise and went to 105 after a hard time.
i'm on autronic ecu and been looking through my data logging and the max temp it seen was 96 degrees
when i was connected into my ecu my laptop was saying my coolant was 85 degrees but my stack gauge was saying it was 95 degrees.

which is more accurate? they both beside each other

How can they both be beside each other - the ECU reads the coolant from the sensor in the block and the Stack will be where-ever you have mounted the sender?

Where have you mounted the Stack sender?

There will be temperature variations around the cooling system........

its a 4x4 head and they both at the back of the head on the inlet side.
where abouts on the block is the coolant sensor? never seen one there before only on the head?

Sorry, I meant head . Was talking to someone else about 10 studding a block, so had blocks on the brain .

I find my stack ones reasonably accurate but the oil press one is a smidgen high, dosnt effect me cause I know,id go by ecu as I do with my t2.

According to my ICES monitor mine runs between 87 and 89 degrees. However I do have a 88 degree thermostat fitted.

Would you suggest trying a new sensor for the stack gauge?
It seem to be 10 degrees out

You got me thinking for a minute there lol.
Do you sell the temp senders for the stack water gauge?
Have you got them in stock?

My logger is averaging 85 degrees a think.
Ive reset on logger and will get some more results.

Remove it from the car and test it in boiling water first.....

I can get the spare parts, but I hate seeing people waste money unnecessarily. You're assuming it is the Stack, but it could be the water temp sensor, so test first .

                        Cheers mike,
Just done I quick test but will need a thermometer to be accurate.
Boiled the kettle and put some in a cup.
                        Stack reads 80
                        Ecu reads. 72.9

                        Which will be correct?

You need to take the kettle out to the garage and keep it boiling when the sensors are put in. The water can't go above 100°C when it is boiling, so which-ever says it's 100°C is the right one .

Are you using the correct (GM) water temp sensor for the SM4? The Std cosworth sensor is not the same as supplied with the SM4 (but they do look similar).

Mine just the standard ford sensor
