  • Head Differences?

Whats the difference between a 2wd and 4x4 head?

And how do you tell which is which? Do they a certain number on the head anywhere or does the oil feed for the turbo determine it?

    Thanks Billy

One comes on a 2wd engine, the other comes on a 4wd engine

          Sorry Bill, couldn't resist

easiest way to tell is on the turbo side

as mentioned above the 2wd head has 2 lugs built into the casting there for a turbo damper

also 4wd have an oil feed on turbo side for turbo feed pipe

A 2wd head on a 4x4 bottom end will lower your comp to about 7,8:1.
The combustion chamber is different in the 2wd head.

water temp sensor is on the left in front of the exh manifold on 2wd,and 4x4 is at the rear bellow inlet manifold
                  Thanks Mark.

                    interesting.....

was it an old cheap way of lowering compression for upping the power without going for new pistons???

maybe from a new head, now it depends on how much the head has been skimmed.

I have one of the very early 2wd heads on mine and it's had to have various work to make it usable for the spec i've gone for

Head Bolt holes have had to be opened up to allow the nut's for long studs, to actually get the nut in the holes and wide enough to fit a socket over i think they were opened to 25mm

The base for the nut's inside the head to seat have had to be machined flat as they had a lip around the edge.

The std damper bracket has been milled of the side flat to allow a GT30 compressor housing.

Mine has a 2 bolt therm housing.

I'd love to know what's been done to mine as it's a Julian Godfrey 2wd head.
Mine has 3bolt thermo housing, temp sensor at the back and fits long studs no problem
