  • Fire!!

On the way home from work today and the Escos caught fire!!! It looked like the battery cables had shorted out...............loads of smoke, so pulled over as the car was juddering a lot. Lifted the bonnet and FLAMES coming from the cables next to bettery!!

Luckily enough I got them extinquised in time before she actually "went up". Did manage to limp home as I wasn't too far away and turned the engine off, lifted the bonnet to check on exactly how much damage there was.

All the wires going to the little fuse box had melted and the main wire from the positive side of battery to the little fuse box also got cremated

Had a go at re-wiring it all, but kept getting the wires (I think they feed the heated screen) as an "earth" instead of "live" when connected to the battery, so was shorting out all the time.
Checked the starter motor's wires and all seemed OK and then I thought, don't let it be the fusebox!!
I had no dash lights, heater blower or ignition Anyway took the fusebox down to see if there was any damage, but nothing seemed to have had a problem!
I've since re-wired the small fusebox and main feed to it from the battery and then checked the polarity of all the wires. All seems OK now and have since started the car, alternator's working (thank God ) and it seems so is everything else.
No idea why when I tested the small fusebox wires they were all coming back as negative polarity

Another day in the ownership of the Ford Escort RS Cosworth!!

get a square post battery straight away and also just make sure the cover or something suitable is over the battery to stop it from happening again

I cant believe that this keeps on happening. All round post battery escort owners out there please please check your cars over and if in doubt buy a plastic battery cover from fords for a tenner or so,this could save your car for you. Square posts are available too so if you can swap please swap.

Glad you got away with it this time scouse
