Apart from the fire that started under the ford, I'm amazed by the way the steering wheel behaved. I though all cars since the early 80's have had retractable column
Was impressed the way the ford didn't crush the dash and passengers but apart from that....

holy shit! the vw didnt cope very well. does anyone rememer the episode of top gear when clarkson was on about how bad the ford escort was - asked the audience if anyone owned an escort and some guy said yes, but then added its a cosworth so clarkson said oh well that doesnt count and shook his hand!!?

oh dear, you would be so mashed up after being in that VW!

IIRC it was part of a TV programme showing what heavy loads can do to a very rust vehicle. for eg the load in that VW was 1 tonne doing 30 mph as it hit the wall. That is the equivalent of being crushed by 30 tonne's.
Definitely not good to have that much weight behind you and not much steel in front of you .

As to the Escort, its all relative. I learned to drive in a 1972 Hillman Hunter and it was my first car (which I drove for over 40k miles)in the early 80's. Compare to that the Escort was groundbreaking technology when it came to crash safety. its not really fair comparing it to the latest Volvo with airbags.
