Ok one for the engineers on here I'm having a new garage built and I'm thinking of getting a lath and bench milling machine but would you recommend a model makers lath as I'm not looking at doing large stuff just using steel stock up to 40mm I'm looking into something that is 12" centre to centre
    Any info welcome

Seen a smaller one that will fit on a work bench so will be able to do any small jobs we need as lom
Ng as its small stuff (12" long)

A machine with 12" centres is going to be a bit feable Jim and not very sturdy.

go for the biggest one you have room for is my advice.

        single or three phase.

12" centers will be too small imo and will be very sloppy, although they are usable as i had 1 for the last year and made a lot with it. great for starting out though.

Get one with at least a 250mm swing so you can do brake bells on it and imo 24" between centers is a good size

You can turn small things on a big lathe but you cant turn big things on a small lathe ,

This is the one i am looking at getting now to replace my old 12" center hobby lathe

Good call on the myford 7.

Single phase too, so its plug and play

No idea what price point you want but here are some ideas:

This one is small and the quality is second to none for a manual machine:

Bigger, cheaper and more heavy duty but still not a large lathe:

Forget the ones that can sit on top of your workbench.
