can anyone help i went to put my exhaust manifold back on my escos and noticed a crack underneath right in the middle can this be repaired or does anyone have one 4x4
You can weld it with a standard MiG welder. Obviously using a Tig welder and the correct rods for the high Nicol content of the manifold would be the best repair.
The manifold is heated with a blow torch ( hot as you can get it.) The crack is then welded up and whilst the metal is still amber you tap the weld continuously with a small ball pain hammer untill the metal stops glowing. Then the whole manifold is allowed to cool slowly.
Tapping the glowing weld increases its density and makes sure shrinkage cracks dont appear. Once the metal is at a uniform heat then it wont shrink anymore any you can stop tapping.
I have used this process many times to repair cast items including rally car ESCOS manifolds. TBH if left the crack doesn't seem to get any worse. A chap I know told me before I welded it up , that it had been in the manifold for years.
