The Cosworth engine will take a HUGE amount of abuse before it actually lets go. It is a VERY strong engine. As I said, this kind of detonation is accumalative and depending on how the car is driven the majority of the time, might not cause any catastrophic damage. My car needed new pistons and luckily the head was being fully ported anyway, so this was all cleaned up when this was done. The damage was only noticed when the engine was stripped and it drove fine before this.
I could run my own car on normal unleaded and as long as I knew I had it in the car and drove it accordingly, could do so without incurring ANY damage. However, it would be a very boring car to drive then.
