  • Low Fuel warning light flickering even with tank full

Random one that maybe one of you have come across before - my low fuel level amber light flickers in the bottom right of my instrument cluster, only every now and then, doesn't seem related to bumps / fuel level or anything - just randomly lights for a second then goes out.

Bloody annoying as with Cossie paranoia I pap myself whenever I see an extra light come on

I suppose I need to get nosing around the car for duff connections, but just wondered if anyone else had this and what they did to solve?

Trying to iron out all the little niggles with the car, and this is one of them!

Is it the fuel one or the washer bottle fluid level? (Just checking )

          Mine too.

Does it somewhere between 1/2 to 3/4.

          I just live with it.

That would be my normal route of repair , however I'm trying with this car to fix and improve it as best I can so would be good to sort it properly.

99% it's the fuel one, although if it's the washer level, that's full too so it's still a pain in the RS!

Hmm, another niggle we all put up with... I'll have to get under the car with some electrical contact cleaner and see if I can trace the problem!

I think the reason they do this is that the sender has 2 carbon tracks with wiper arms that give a changing resistance as the tank empties. One of them is used by the gauge, the other by the low fuel light. The tracks wear over time / use resulting in a broken circuit.

I had to replace my sender unit and wasn't prepared to pay the price of a genuine cossie sender, so used one from a fiesta but it didn't have the second track - so I soldered in a suitable resistor so the low fuel light never comes on now. But at least the gauge now works properly!

                    Si, your local to Yeovil?

                    What Cosworth do you have?

As Dave_M says probably the sender, IIRC there is a big multiplug behind the rear bumper that has the connections for the level sender in it. Quickest thing to do would be to make sure that is secure and the connections are clean/properly made.
