  • BMX Gearing Question

Ok so not a car based thread let alone an Escos based one but as there seems to be a few BMX peeps on here, ive got a question

What would be the best gearing to use to keep at a steady minimum average speed of about 12mph ?

Im doing a bike ride in the summer with some lads from work and for some strange reason i really want to do it on an old skool freestyle type BMX. Its a 450 mile trip

I havent counted up the teeth yet on the bike ive been training on but will do that later and let you know but i need to raise the ratio a little bit

    Cheers in advance

Christ Darren, I think for that mileage you may regret not having a load of gears to go through

      Best of luck though

Wow, I missed the 450 mile part.

Are you sure you want to do it on a BMX?

            Hell yeah

The lads im doing it with fall into any or all of the below categories: -
            1. Fat
            2. Unfit (not that im fit by the way)
            3. Have all bought £1k plus road bikes and dont know how to use them
It'll be a right laugh (i hope !) and is going to be for a good cause

Only thing that does worry me a bit is that when i drove the full route on Sunday to make sure that roads did exist and were suitable etc, there are some absolute corkers of downhills
This is good but i had visions of my little green brake blocks giving up the ghost when they melt the mag wheels

Anyway, here's a pic of the beast

Looks like that will be 43 tooth chainring with a 14 tooth freewheel on that. I used to like 45/14 for trails(dirt jumps) and race track , but its a little harder to get going for freestyle/park riding.

So if it were me using that for long distance I'd want a nice compremise. Not to tough for the hills but enought top end speed to keep up with the geared fellas.

44 tooth is fine imo , but count the teeth as it may well have that allready.

I'll have a count up tonight and let you know. I put a similar thread on RadBMX and the response was that a 45:16 ratio would be best compromise. How much different would this be do you reckon than a 45:14 ? Quite a bit or square root of fook all

What's on it at min is a 40:16.

So is a 45:16 a nice cruising speed sort of ratio then ?
