  • Gearbox noise (update)

No not sure if all the 4x4 saphs and escorts do this but when ticking over if you dab the throttle i can hear a slight backlash noise, its fine whilst driving and selecting gears etc, no oil leaks i can see etc, if you press and hold the clutch in it goes away and wont do it, its defo not a release bearing noise i dont think, any ideas or am i just paranoid

Im not sure mine is that, it sounds more internal to me but only does it with a very quick dab of the throttle if you hold the revs up or rev it rather than dab the pedal it doesnt do it? what oil do they take and where is the filling hole, could it be low?

They take MT75 oil and if I mind right there is a plug half way up the box that's the fill point. Could be the transfer box??

Well the noise does seem to be louder if you hold you hand on that part of the box where the two prop shafts come out ?, does the transfer box use its own oil or does it take it soild from teh gearbox as i may as well top both up tomorrow, is it a case of filling till it wheeps out the hole?

If it is the transfer box it's a new gear box as far as I know you can't change the transfer box on it's own got to be a new box. I found out my transfer box was away when I went on a rolling road not cool.

Transferbox have it`s own oil. The chain, make some noise when it`s stretched

It must be your visco coupling, who was worn then. It`s an easy job to change on car

ok cheers guys, being its only just started doing it tonight after a short drive should i just drain the box and transfer box and then refill with new oil to see if that helps as the box did feel quite hot when i put my hand on the trasnfer part. It was all refurbished a few years ago but has done hardly any mileage so maybe they didnt realise the transfer box has its own oil

If you need parts for it, then gears.tv is a great place to shop. They also have new chains

How can i tell if it is the chain and can that be changed in situ?

You can changed that in situ, just take of the rear propp shaft, then the rear end of transfer case. It normaly makes a noice, when you slip the clutch, and the play between front and rear propp shaft will be bigger

Well after checking the play bewteen the prop shafts i could see there was no problem with the chain, had a visual look at everything else and it all seemed in order. So what i did was jack it up and drained the fluids, transfer box was very tainted like a grey colour, main gearbox was a tainted brown colour and didnt seem to be 1.2-1.4 litres that come out, after they where drained i filled them with nice fresh fluids and took it for a drive, got the box all nice and hot, i must of got lucky as the noise has pretty much gone to the point i would say it sounds perfectly normal, so i might keep it till the next time i use it and something else happens or breaks !!

No i didnt need to mate there was no play between the prop shaft so cant see there being an issue with the chain
