  • Decision time.

    Right folks.

Im seriously considering breaking my 106 cosworth project, basically reason been its been a complete nightmare from day 1 due to various reasons, the amount of money involved in the car with no enjoyment from it, apart from the hand full of times i drove it in standard spec from buying it, there is still a fair chunk to spend to finish it aswell.

The money part isnt really the main problem, its just its dragged on far to long and its actually got me stressed in the process, the missus has been very patient but has also agreed it would probably be best to stop with the build, she has told me to buy something complete, like a well spec'd 3 door or Escos.

My decision will be made in the next couple of days, and from then a big list of some very nice parts will be up for grabs.

My only concern basically will be the shell, it will be completed soon by AG so, how would it sell best? Painted? Rolling? i just dont no, as all the running gear is wrc spec.

Its a real shame if i go ahead and break and i will be gutted but at the same time relieved to be honest.

    Thanks Robert

Shame Robert if you do decide to give up having gone this far.

    IMO, carry on with it.

Thats very true Dave, but ive still along way to go and im fed up of handing over thousands and getting nothing back, the money i have invested could buy me alot of car just jump in and go.

Its had me stressed for some time now and the missus see's this, ive just bought a new house with an empty garage and i just cant really be arsed with it all now.

i used to buy 106's all the time as they were easy sellers but they appealed to old gits buying a cheep car for themselves or the grandchild etc and young nob heads wanting a gti or quicky or do one up like one.
i also hate projects that drag on and then you lose the will,i'd just bung the bits into a ford, its designed for it and theres no problem putting cosworth bits into a cosworth.
shame but i'd always say don't fo what you did unless you have soooo much money to waste its not gonna affect you.

That's coming from me who's thinking of building a RS500 touring car rep, with that big spec engine as no one wants to buy it

Everything fits thats not the problem.

It is basically just the fact its dragged on far too long, and im fed up of handing over ££££ due to that.
Im not willing to down spec it either, id rather break it.

well whats it need to finish, then get a quote to do that at 1 place and you could end up with the thing done sooner rather than later,i think some people like building stuff and the chase for bits, then when its done as driving and trailering it around is a pita they get shut.

Getting good money for the shell at this time might be an issue

But best if luck if you do decide to let it all go

Having just taken 5 years to complete the Ka, I know very well what you're experiencing Robert

Many times I made a list of all the bits to sell, started looking at 996 turbos etc, but just could not post it....and after driving it out the workshop on saturday(grinning from ear to ear) I was so glad I finished it.

It's a crazy wee car with an awesome spec...so chop chop and get it built

Robert when you were telling me about some of the money you have spent on it I thought you must be crazy, I think you should buy an Escos and pick and choose the parts you want to use on that and sell what you don't need, I'd sell all wrc stuff separate and shell on it's own because wrc stuff should sell to some ppl on here etc,

I was building a mk1 fiesta van rwd Cosworth, And I got to the same stage as you and sold it as a project, But was then gutted I sold it so ended up buying the shell bk to sit in the garage to know see where all my money has gone, But even at that having the Escos sitting there Next to it I'd choose Escos every time, buy a escort and make it how u want it ,

The problem is that people always set themselves optimistic deadlines and then get stressy when these come and go. When I did my resto on the Escort (which took over 18months), I started off trying to work to self imposed deadlines (trying to get it ready for specific events and then having to move the goal-post to the next one and then the next one). In the end, I though fuck it, it's going to be ready when it's ready and not before. Once I had decided that, I started to really enjoy doing it and lost all stress levels relating to the car. Combined with spreading it out over a long period, it also meant that I wasn't counting the cost of doing it either.

As soon as you impose a deadline, the costs spiral out of control. So my advice would be to finish it, but do things at a pace that doesn't cause any stress. Just order the bits and forget about them until they arrive.

I know the difficulties you've had with the project fella most people would have buckled long ago, Speaking with you it seems to be getting you down more and more every time. In your situation I might be tempted to sell it all buy a nice decent spec escos to track and put the rest into your new mortgage

Have you bought a box yet? If not I see how much you've still got to spend and how it could drag you down
