  • Checking engine oil level

Is it best to check the level of engine oil when car is warm or cold, just checked mine there now when cold and level is at min, checked it a week ago when warm and it was perfect level.
    Should I top up?

PS how often do you top up your oil and what oil would be best to use?

I have Millers 5W 30 in the garage would this be ok?

NO oil is too thin If the engine hasn't been run for a while run it and leave for 5 mins then check oil level depending on what state your engine is in you can expect 1L per tank as ford used to recommend checking oil levels every fill up so read into that what you will

OH FUCK WHAT WAS THAT NOISE

I have no idea what oil is in it ATM?

Does it matter topping up with a different oil?

Be best changing the oil and filter in that case. Put something decent in so you know exactly what you have.

Does this not give an accurate level then?

As I said its at min when cold and perfect when warm, which do I go with as I don't want to put too much in!!

don't want to get into another long internet debate with people who are experts that work at b and q or mcdonalds etc
oil level should be between min and max close to max at all times
                  read your owners manual
you typically will have less oil showing on the stick after the engine has run
leaving your car to cool down to check the oil will take many many hours
so like I said checking your oil from cold only is bollox

Just found it from previous owner that the current oil is 5W 30.

                    Is this ok?

This might be the reason that the car is a bit tappety when first started from cold??

5/30 is what I've got in my Mondeo TDCI. Get that shit out and get some 10/50, 10/60 or 15/50 in it. Quite a few good brands on the market.
