ive had one for over 2 years now and it's been brilliant, it does 40mpg average no problem
faults to look for are egr valves the euro 4 engines ones are worse as they are electronic if changing it use a jaguar part as it's half the price of a ford one!!
change the fuel filter regualarly and the clutch flywheel issues is common on all modern diesels!

Tac had one for a couple of years and it was a good car to him while he had it. I wouldn't buy one, though. I always thought it was a bit clunky and noisy, but then I've been driving German for the last 4 years now. I'd sooner buy a Passat as already mentioned.
We had one for work and it was absolutely awesome it had had the cat removed and we got it chipped and it flew, i managed 66mpg being VERY good on the motorway, but high 30s tearing about town and mid 50s on a run at 80mph. I'm going to get one when the saff is done hopefully. The early ones are better IMO, the boost is in hard and not gradual, the gear linkage or mechanism is better too, more positive, may be me but I thought so anyway.
Things to look out for as above, the dual mass flywheel, rear beam bushes, wheels are normally always terrible. The injectors sometimes lose code but can be recoded

I've had mine for 5 years now and done 100k miles in it myself and it's been a cracker of a car.
The only problems I've ever had are
1. The wheels corrode like mad, and they corrode on the inner lips too, which causes them to lose pressure. You really need to keep an eye on the pressures because I've had 3 blowouts now. I've replaced 3 of the wheels with new ones and the fourth seems to be holding pressure but is very corroded, so when I decide to change that I'm going to get something different. And even though the new ones haven't been on very long they're starting to show some signs of corrosion. You'll be extremely lucky to find one now that hasn't got some corrosion on the wheels.
2. Make sure it's got a good quality tyre on because they are very heavy cars and the mega cheap tyres mine had on when I got it basically all split. I think they were Nexens. Actually I'm running Marshalls now which were a reasonable price and seem fine, very quiet tyre too.
3. Apparently they had a camber problem from the factory and mine has been reset/aligned several times now because it wore down the inner edges of the tyres really badly, and I mean badly, i.e. the rest of the tyre still had 5 or 6mm left and the insides were bald as a coot.
Apart from that, it has been the best car I've ever owned, I soon get bored if they're unreliable but this has been 100% reliable, is quick and torquey, I do virtually all motorway driving in it and get near to 50mpg, it's got everything you could wish for re equipment, including cruise which I use all the time, the tax is reasonable at £160 or £165 a year this year, the insurance is reasonable too.
The only other problem area generally is with the injectors on the TDCi engine, because they are stupid expensive if you need to replace them, but I've never had any problems with mine.
I'm going to keep mine for as long as it's reliable, so that must tell you something.
They are a lot of car for the money.
I have been looking for one for a while now every one I view are stone chipped to death or have car park dints really bad
I've had mine for a long time and looked after it, its only got one parking dent on the drivers door where some careless git dinked it in my works carpark. I'm actually very careful where I part mine because they've got nothing to protect them from that down the sides.
