how do 3 door sierra.s drive compared to the escort?
its this geezers fault i keep looking at them, it takes me back to when i saw one in the carpark whilst sitting in my dads cortina!!!...ha ha when the boom comes again id like to have one in my garage, defo in white!... its like the escort thou, you cant really test drive them to get a feel as no,one will let you have a go!...saying that i didnt even drive the escort & i brought it.... still dont know why i didnt test drive it, think i was that excited & it looked good enough to me..

a very nice drive however its only rwd which for me is pointlees,4x4 cosworths are better imo.
Well all the 3 doors iv driven are shit but as said 2wd Saph

i agree,the 3dr's are good when its bone dry but totally wank as in the wankest car ever in the wet or damp or greasy surface. i'd rather walk than drive a 2wd cozzeh fast in the damp etc as imo they are dangerous. A escort cozzeh is the best handling cosworth when your driving hard or the weathers shit.
yep which is where it counts lad,the escort cosworth was tested at the nurburgring (before those track day poofs ruined it) when in development by ford germany and i can tell yer now it was faster round there than 2wd cozzehs for sure
if you think 2wd is better in a cosworth than 4wd you should of been in Fords SVE Department and suggested to them that 4wd like a lancia delta or toyota celica gt4 etc etc was a complete waste of time and money because 2wd feels better
IMO
3dr is bigger than the ESCOS and feels to be more comfortable( spring set up) than the Escort. It has better luggage capability compared to the Saph and superior luggage space compared to the escort. MK1 Dash is old and dated and can look quite tatty with the usual plastic cracks.
It is far better for passengers than the Escort but not as good as the Saph.
The 3 dr and the Escort are more rigid than a Saph but both the 3 dr. 2wd Saph and 4x4 Saph have much better rear end handling characteristics due to the extra length and feel more stable.
BUT I would say the best all rounder if you can handle the aged look is the Saphire. Its the best car for every day driving Ive ever had, it just doesn't have the looks or street cred of as ESCOS. Dry weather all standard cars , good tyres etc the 3 dr will walk away from a 4X4 Saph and ESCOS.
In the wet or poor road surface I believe the 4x4 will leave the Escos perhaps not in acceleration but sure footedness ....the 3dr will be a small hand full.
I am sorry but a Saph is a lot more rigid than a 3dr, the 3drs have always had the weak link of being very soft shell wise. I could jack the corner of my saph up and the doors would still open and shut fine, the. Same cannot be said for my 3 dr which would catch if you did the same. I remember reading about how the pillar used to move on the RS500 touring cars and touch the roll cage taking paint off.
I was talking to Ahmed years ago and he was tellin me how a mk1 focus shell is 40% stiffer than an escos shell. Shows how much things have moved on.

We will have to agree to differ on that one then The Saph isn't as rigid as a 3 door. Once a cage is fitted then theres little difference in the two. But i can assure you, the extra holes left by the doors does make a diffence.
You will also notice the diffence in the two if you do any rally accident damage repairs like Ive done. If you have to remove bent and damaged roll bars from a Saph you have to be much more careful as the shell is prone to twisting as it relaxes. A 3 dr is much less prone to " relax" it still can especially if the triangulation is remove from the B post to the rear strut tops but not a likely as the 4x4.
it is in fact a bad idea to remove any roll caging form an old rally car but sometimes needs must.
If you think about it, in standard road form ( not rally car) an extra 2 doors has to make a difference.
RED looked into the possibility of welding the rear doors shut to increase the strength but apparently when they talked to the FIA they said it would compromise the GPA homologation certification.
Ive had them all my rwd saph's were the best out the lot imho followed by my aurliss escort & 3 door dont know why my escort just felt special but rwd saph's are where its at cant beat breaking traction at 100 + mph

This is true if we was rallying the cars...
Most on this site struggle to get them wet let alone unleash one on a gravel track.
I had a 4x4 escort and a rwd escort, for the road at least, the 2wd makes a lot more sense. If the 4x4 gearbox and diffs could take more power, then maybe not an issue. But spending half the price of the car again on a gearbox and two diffs is not what I call fun
