If you're pregnant, the baby's due date is on or after 6 April 2009 and you're at least 25 weeks pregnant you're entitled to a £190 one-off, tax free payment from the government. The grant isn't means-tested and comes in addition to any benefits or tax credits you get, including the Sure Start Maternity Grant, so if you're eligible make sure you apply.
The Health in Pregnancy Grant (HipG) is aimed at doing exactly what it says on the tin, keeping you fit and healthy in the last trimester of your pregnancy.
Who's eligible?
You can get the grant if all of the following apply:
* you are 25 weeks pregnant or more
* your expected date of delivery is on or after 6 April 2009
* you have been given health advice from a midwife or doctor
How do you apply?
To get it you need to ask your midwife or doctor for the Health in Pregnancy Grant form, or phone the HipG Helpline on 0292 050 1178.
The forms are already available now so even if you're not 25 weeks pregnant yet ask for one now so you've plenty of time to fill it in. You can also sign up for a free text or email reminder on the Directgov website.
The mum-to-be must be the one who fills the form in. You'll need your bank account details and National Insurance number to hand.
Then ask your midwife to sign the form. The form needs to have been received within 31 days of them signing the form so don't ask them to sign it until you're ready to send it.
You should be given a reply-paid envelope with the form. If not, then post it to:

The £190 will go straight into your (the mum-to-be's) bank or building society account. If you apply before 1 April, the payment will not come until after this date.
