  • buying a vw van with over 150k to 230k? would it scare you?

hi all van people!...im looking at vw t5 vans on ebay & some have massive milage.. would it bother you?.. if the engine went bang, how much would a recon job cost approx? or would you buy with as lower miles as you could?.. also if the engine has done that many miles, buying one with 100k + should be no problem..

Had loads of t5 t4 etc excellent vans do cope well with mileage but they are not perfect but what modern diesel is

Great van s but being cool makes them serious money compared to transits, vauxhalls, peugueots etc

At that miles 150,000 most of the shitty injector problems etc should be sorted

    T5 bad points
Both 2.5 and 1.9 version suffer with injectors problems
1.9 the loom for injector runs inside the head gets warm cold warm cold and causes problems
Gearbox fall out at 120k if builders used it
2.5 engines second hand start from £1000 up wards
Clutches and duo fly mass fitted around £400 up wards
Driver Interior seat show miles easily
Water pump leaks and normally not seen until to late by a lot of people as it drips down block and drys so never hits the floor
Quite a few job need the front completely removed which costs time
Alternator bang smack in the middle the engine needs front taken off

All this above but I still love them

We had a T5 with 11,000 miles on the clock and the gearbox needed a rebuild, new syncros in 2nd and 3rd.

i think the best of any van is over at 150k/200k am not saying there is not plenty of driveing still left in it but the van will start to have and need more repairs
i my self have a merc sprinter from new , its getting close on 140k on it now in 4.5 years . i had the first 4 years with no problems and no cost other than service costs.
how ever in the past 6 months i have had 2 small brake downs costing almost 1k .
a van and all its parts will wear out ect and will need replaced through time and will start to cost lots
i think it better to buy a van with as low of millage as you can aford .
stay away from a vw and buy a good small wheel base transit . you will get lots more for your money, you will get newer and lower millage for the same dosh as a vw

          thanks steven

We had the 1.9 t5 on a 58 plate at work and apart from the usual brake discs and pads it was pretty good. Although the drivers window was intermittent from new sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't, sometimes it stopped at the bottom and took ages to get it to go back up. The alternator also packed up one month after the warranty ran out and it had a brake sensor fault where the eml was on all the time. Apart from that it was a good van, pretty good on juice too even loaded up to the hilt flat out on the motorway.

We never really had any problems with our Transits. We had a 125PS Tipper and it was so quick for a van.
I prefered how it drove as well compared to the T5. Radio was better in the T5 though

when i subbed to a poultry catching firm, the catch teams all ran t5 vans, and a lot of them had gearbox issues, they have now moved onto vauxhall vivaro's. personally i love vw vans but i think they are far too overpriced. if they were bullet proof then fair enough - but they are not.
                    one for the road?? ......
