  • Problem installing XP on ASUS P9X79 Deluxe motherboard.

I have built up a new computer now and for the first time ever I am not able to get the OS to install. I have built quite a few computers before and there was never problems like this.

The main difference from the others I have built is that this motherboard does not have support for a floppy disk. My usual tactic is to boot from a Win98Se startup floppy.
I have tried to boot from different USB stick with both DOS and WIN98 startup on them. The only one that will boot is a very basic windows version which does not recognize the CD/DVD or NTFS-drives. It will boot from the XP CD but the installation will crash with BSOD...

My current plan is to format a new harddrive I have ordered, with FAT32 and copy the XP content onto that. Maybe the basic DOS from USB will recognize that and install will work (running the i386/winnt) ?

    Any suggestions are very welcome!

Sounds very much like if you have a BSOD then something is not right with your hardware. Can you see the error code at all ?

It could be anything from a dodgy memory chip HDD etc etc just double check everything again.

Most PC,s now do not have the option for floppy disk so this is nothing new. to be honest you dont really need them i like them but im old school

I would use a USB dvd rom drive and in the BIOS set the boot options to boot to removable drives/devices first. then DVD rom then HDD

You shouldnt need to use a win 98 floppy disk to install windows XP i used to do that install win 2000 but everything you need to install XP is on the disk just make sure the disk if it is a copy has been made bootaball.

You should really be formatting the hard drive to NTFS as fat 32 has a format limit to 32GB that could be why the blue screen is showing.

Can i ask why aint you installing win 7 ? i had a laptop which i could not get XP on it for love or money put win 7 on ther and has worked fine thats been like that for over 2 years now.

Let me know how you get on and if i can help anymore then please just ask.

Just change the boot up device to the CD drive, Win 7 etc should just run straight from this. No need for a boot disk

Thanks for the input so far psygnosis

The reason I use XP is that some hardware/software I use (camera) wouldn't work with win7.

When trying to install straight from CD (booting from CD).
XP install went fine during "Setup is loading files". Then BSOD:

.. has stopped to prevent damage to your system.

        Stop: 0x0000007E (0xC000005,0xF748E0BF,0xF78DA208,0xF78D9F08)

        pci.sys - address F748E0BF base at F7487000, datestamp 3b7d855c

I kind of got dos started from a 98SE boot CD but not completely. I get an read error on A: (which is CD in this case). But I can get to the USB with XP on it. The problem then is that I can't load smartdrive because himem.sys is not loaded...

Have you something plugged into your PCI slot

          I'm guessing a graphics card ?????

Remove the PCI graphics card or anything else plugged into the PCI slot and use the on board graphics card.

Try that of that don't work try removing a memory chip (if you are using 2)

I'm prity sure it's hardware related

          Let me know.

I have tried removing all PCI cards except graphics card since there is no onboard graphics. But I have tried a different card, and in different slots.
I also tried removing memory, moving it around and checked it for errors.
I also removed all other hardware but it did not help.

I got it to install a version of XP with SP3 streamlined but that reported an error with the XP license at the login screen and there is no way to get rid of that that I found.

So basically I gave up the X79 card and got a Gigabyte card with socket 1366, on which the floppy driver/connection was DOA.

I would still like to know what the issue was with the X79 card and XP though as it was a much nicer card if it had worked..

Sounds like your hard disk is potentially set to the wrong mode in the Bios.
Enter bios and set the SATA drives to "Compatibility" if it has the option.

I tried all 3 options and I made no difference. Thanks for the idea though !
