  • How can i get my old Reg plate back?

I've got a private plate on a car that is never going back on the road and has no TAX or MOT. Is it possible or should i wave goodbye?

I am sure if you ask someone nicely they will MOT it, put some tax on it and get it off then scrap it... But would need an understanding MOT guy and trust between both of you

I could do this, however, what is the process for changing plate from one vehicle to another? Do I need to take it anywhere because that could be my problem.

Dont think you have to take the car anywhere. Just show the correct documentation to the DVLA. They will issue the old plate back or a age related place back. Then scrap or sell the car but sell with no MOT

You may well have to take the car to the local DVLA office so they can check chassis number and engine number, I had to do this with one of mine when I wanted to remove the plate

I've swapped a few plates over the years and got a couple on retention at the moment and never taken a car to be inspected. Just take your logbook, mot and tax disc to your local dvla office and they do the rest.

If the car has been out of tax & test for some time they will want to inspect it if all of a sudden it's got tax & test and you request to remove the plate.

As long as it's taxed &mot'd then its fine, the dvla could ask to inspect the vehicle but they couldn't care less as long as there's t&t on the car.

I actually trailered a rolling shell to the dvla office once for the car to be inspected, it had t&t so they couldn't argue

they choose one in ten cars now for inspection, sometimes its the police that actually come round to check the car as well

alls you can do is only try, i had a p/p on my saf that hasnt been on the road for 9 years, i decided to finally declare it scrap last week as wasnt worth the hassle

There was a similar post on here about this a few months ago. My mate was in the same situation, wrote to the DVLA, explained the problem and they removed the plate for him. No MOT or Tax required. Might be worth a try.
