  • Fitting HID to a Standard Headlight

Been working on this problem for a while now. I wanted to fit HID but I wanted it to look standard and have all the wires hidden away.

I have just completed thr first one. I haven't tried it yet but it will fit. But whether it works or not I will find out in a few weeks time.

This is how I have done it.

Firstly take a good condition headlight. This was a very difficult decision

    Then dismantle the Headlight.

This is the set I bought a while back to fit. It is only the low beam i have changed.

Then the bit I was not looking forward to do. After this there was no going back. Drill the hole for the wiring to enter into the bottom.

    Marked out.

    Hole Drilled

    Trial fitted.

Then removed the light connector and replaced them with spade connectors.

    Another trial fit

I then drilled and made spacers for the ballast box. All fasteners and parts are stainless steel.

Then fitted it all properly. With rubber sealing washers on the bolts and all sealed with loctite 595. Which is a posh silicone sealant.

    Bulbs and reflectors final fitted.

Now assembled. View from above. As you can see it looks standard.

View from underneath. All this will be hidden in behind the bumper.

Job done. Just need to do the other side now.

        Instant MOT fail though

You need headlight washers and self levelling to go through a test.

i dont think its an mot failure is it? but its deffo not legal as such ,as paul says it needs washers and levellers, but its a very tidy job, well done
i fitted some to the wifes fiesta, identical to those but one packed up after a few weeks so i fitted standard ones again

Our police is very strict on this type of mod, they ask for homologation, take the registration certificate away and invite to have a fresh MOT
I saw a modification similar to yours, but the glass of the headlights was "flatened" (grinded from inside) and bi-xenon lenses were applied, homologation wasn't

I changed mine to the bi xenon type modified the low beam three pin plug and added a third spade connector to pick up the original high beam aswell , just drilled and grometed the black cover for cable access ,the beam pattern is a bit larger but passed the MOT and the headlights are so much better ,yours is nice and neat but a pain if you need to change the ballast ...........Rashers

I've got the headlight washers. That is why this a second set that I bought just in case it does fail. I still have the originals on the car at the moment.

                      Thanks everyone for the comments.

Clear glass and lenses are must otherwise it lights allover. Clear morettes are the best base for upgrade.

Been reading a lot about policy going through Euro Parliament outlawing all HID kit headlights if the car was not originally fitted with them. However its the same stupid Euro geeks that want to ban all modded ecu's ect ect. Weather or not we adopt these draconian Euros laws is another thing. but I was assured by a rather jobs worth MOT terser that he would fail any HID installation that didn't heave leveling systems and washers . I think there another thing to go wrong TBH and was a cause for failure on my 911 . I suspect the dont like damp one little bit
However i have to say so far as DIY modding goes you have done a bloody brilliant job. Very neat and well planned
